Electrolytes

I had a low-blood pressure thing happening this morning.  It happens sometimes...maybe once every couple of months, where my vision is affected.  My doctor just told me to drink some Gatorade and it will go away.  That does work, but...YUCK!  I hate putting all that sugar and all those chemicals in my body.  Is there a healthier alternative?  Any vegan, natural foods/beverages/etc that have electrolytes?

The same thing happens to me but mine is caused by my mitral valve (heart). I personally love Gatorade better than persay soda or flavored water because it has good "stuff" for your body. Try eating more bananas for potassium and adding more salt to your diet and that should take care of the Gatorade.

i know that whole foods sells an electrolyte enhanced bottled water under their 365 brand.

Clif Bar makes a mostly organic electrolyte replacement drink. They also have Clif Shots, which are concentrated little pouches of the stuff that you need to wash down with water.

Thanks everyone, I'll look around for healthier electrolyte products when I go to Whole Foods or Wild Oats tomorrow.  :)

i agree with eggalergy... your problem might honestly be getting to little salt (i am guessing you are good on potassium because you are going raw right now)

I actually use a LOT of sea salt because I drink tons of water.  Hmm...I wonder if it's supposed to be fortified with sodium?

is it really blood pressure? or blood sugar? or something else?

you mentioned that you drink alot of water, so if its not dehydration that might be causing the low bp, you may drink so much that you have diluted your electrolytes. you can water down alot of those drinks and just sip it thru the day, instead of waiting for it to happen and then having to guzzle it.

i have severly low bp myself...for various reasons.... so 2 things that can help in a pinch:

guzzle 16 oz of water in less than 2 mins...it should raise your bp for at least 30 mins. (course you might be running to the bathroom!)

when you feel faint.... stand w/ your legs crossed and squat slightly... this engages your lower muscles and can pump fluid to your head.

I third the suggestion of coconut water. It doesn't taste like coconuts, even though the name makes you think it does. It's tasty, refreshing, natural, and chock full of electrolytes.

What about Emergen-C?  http://www.emergenc.com/

Smartwater. It's at all the grocery stores and gas stations where i live. it's just filtered water with electrolytes. no weird taste to it. i have a friend who used to drink about a gallon of it everyday while he trained for college football.

I second this.  Tastes just like plain old bottled water.  Sneaky electrolyte-filled water... ;)

Why not add a few grains of salt and Morton salt substitute to a bottle of water.  Electrolytes at a fraction of the cost.
