Does anyone else overeat when stressed?

Hi.  Does anyone else have issues with overeating?

I do, but only when I am stressed, like I am today (in the process of looking for a home to buy and it is stressing me out but I feel somewhat excited, too).

Also dealing with other somewhat stressful financial stuff.

Anyways!  When I am like this I eat and I eat and I eat. It's like I can't get enough, especially protein (vegan, of course).  And when it is happening, I am very aware of my intense craving for food but I can't and don't WANT to stop myself. It's like I feel I NEED it even after eating a lot already.

I am so embarrassed to say but ALREADY today, by 4 PM, I had a HUGE bowl of quinoa white bean tabouli THEN a couple of hours later TWO toasted gluten free english muffins with faux cheese.

I am FINALLY DONE and had enough but who eats like this?  Nuts!  No one in the real world eats like this.

I know this is residual habits from my constant overeating in my twenties but now it rears it's head only when I am stressed. Otherwise I am fine.

And the weird thing is, I am not fat.  I am 5'6.5" tall, and weigh tops 125 and sometimes as low as 121. I am in my mid 40's and amazed I am not fat.  My bf has asked "where do you put it"? If he knew how I ate today, I'd be embarrassed. He lives a very stressful lifestyle but doesn't eat ALL DAY!!!

I know if I didn't eat a vegan, natural whole foods like diet and didn't exercise, I would certainly be fat. But because of what I eat, I am still slim!  Even after eating ALOT!!!

I know yoga and deep breathing and I love these things but when I am in the compulsive mode...it's like a freight train that I cannot stop.  I DO yoga and deep breath but mostly when I am not stressed.  Otherwise, like today my mind is so racing I cannot focus enough to do it.  I can't seem to bring myself to do it.

Anyone relate?

Definitely. Tonight I ate more pizza than I ever have in a sitting in my entire life. Food baby.

I most definitely relate to you here. It is even in times of good stress/elation.
It can be a mix of physiological things and a vitamin deficiency.

Animal protein is high in B vitamins, which are the stress vitamins. Maybe your body is calling back to the meat-eater days for some stress vitamins and you go for the vegan counter parts and fulfill that with quality instead of the condensed animal sourced one. It is probably a mix of many things.

You are not alone. There are so many people with this issue.

*hugs

I overeat probably 5 days a week. It rules and sucks all at the same time. I will never be skinny.

Okay, I'll admit I didn't even read the initial post before my original post (tl;dr). Now that I have, it really doesn't seem like a whole lot of food. Come back when you eat a whole tray of brownies in a sitting, and then go through a couple handfuls of raisins or something.

This. What sounds like crazy overeating to you is pretty much my normal diet.

That said, when I get stressed or upset I usually have the opposite reaction; I eat very little. My friends usually make me count calories when I'm depressed, though even with that I can usually only hit about 1200 a day. Much more than that makes me feel ill.

I think stress can be one of the reasons but I also think it can be this to

boredom
your body is thirsty and it's looking for products to cool down with or your craving salty foods.

Try eating fruit more and drinking fruit juices without any sugar or corn syrup in it as an antidote. It's my guess only.

I too have this same problem or did. I notice that now I stay well hydrated that I don't overeat as much.

I'm much much more of a bored eater. If I'm stressed out enough, I'll often forget to eat (too busy) or not have an appetite. If I have a lot to do, though, sometimes I'll procrastinate by cooking/baking... which inevitably leads to eating the product.

I find when I don't eat I make more mistakes, brain misfires.  Like that ticket I got because I didn't notice the illegal left turn sign. Brain demands food. Eyes need food.  When my cat died, this is a lot for me, I ate three chocolate cupcakes.
