Vege Gardens and pesky critters

My family recently started a vege patch (very exciting, ate some spinach last night!) But we have encountered a problem with some of the plants being chewed up by what I am assuming are slugs.  We really want to keep everything organic and not use any chemicals, also we have lots of pets (dogs, chickens, cats) so slug baits/pellets are out of the question.
Do any VW gardeners have any advice as to how I can repel undesirable garden critters in a natural and safe way?

there is tons of advice at www.organicgardening.com i remember something about a slug trap using a beer can.... i dont remember the whole thing.

Beer traps sometimes help. Basically a little saucer of beer in which the slugs drown themselves. If memory serves. ;)b

Also, you could try sprinkling diatomaceous earth around your plants, if you can get it.

I have used diatomaceous earth and it works well, my grandma swears by the beer trap. But I just switched from watering my garden at night to watering it in the morning and now I have no slugs. Slugs are active at night and thrive in moist conditions, so by watering in the morning it's dry by evening and so now they are completely gone....well, not completely, they just moved over to my neighbors Hostas.
