Reasons to make the O_o Face

There are times when you read, see or hear something that just makes you  :o. This is the thread to share them on!

The other day I don't know where I stumbled on a thread discussing the Nancy Drew novels. I remembered how much I loved them and I did a little research...which led me to the original publishers, who also published the Hardy Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. All written by a cadre of ghost writers under cover names. Then I found a link to an audio book of one of the Bobbsey Twins stories, which I loved when I was a kid. I listened to it for old times' sake. The  :o happened when the author described little Flossie-aged-four's collection of dolls, among which was a black Sambo doll given to her by the family's "coloured cook Dinah, and her husband the stableman, Sam." Who had "excellent rooms above the stables." They had given her this black worsted ragdoll (named Jujube) which she kept with her other dolls..."but apart, at the other end of the shelf, and with a nice  piece of white pasteboard in between--because, well, he wasn't really family."

:o  :o
The story goes on to state that Flossie had thought about giving Jujube away but didn't want to hurt Dinah's feelings; "and after all, as Mamma said, there weren't any doll hospitals for black orphan dolls."

No wonder the Bobbsey Twins books went out of fashion. Nancy Drew is still available today...but then there was nothing like that in them.

So, VWers, what made you :o    today?

My coworkers didn't know anything about veganism until I started working there. Today, one coworker was telling me she was talking to a friend who said her daughter was vegan. Then, the friend started talking about what she's making for Christmas dinner-stuffed shells with cream cheese and chicken and blahblah. My coworker said, "wait..I thought your daughter was vegan, and I that vegans didn't eat that?" The friend said, "Oh, yeah...she doesn't eat red meat."

That's one of those moments where you carry a sign that says, "I'm with stupid" and the arrow points at them. Hahaha

Vincent has this Hot Wheels car that his great aunt bought for him shortly after he was born, but we only gave it to him a few weeks ago.  It's been his favorite toy and it's great to bring with us when we go out because it's small enough to put in my pocket and give it to him whenever he starts getting whiny.  So today I had to get a blood test, and brought Vincent and his Hot Wheels with me.  There's a mall right near the pathology place so we went there for lunch, and Vincent carried his Hot Wheels the whole way until we were almost at the food court, where he dropped it down to the floor below.  I'm not sure, but I think it hit someone.  :o Brat.  We were right near an escalator, so I went down right away but by the time we got downstairs someone had already taken it.

Ohhh noo! Poor Vincent. Those hot wheels are a hot commodity among kids... can't expect a mistakenly dropped one to hang around for long!

What's with people who don't eat ONLY red meat?  Is that because it looks bloodier, and so it grosses them out?  I've never understood the rationalization of why they'll eat one animal but not another.  Has anyone here had the opportunity to inquire on this topic?  I'm intrigued.

I would think it would be the purported health factor. People have always heard how red meat is so bad, and other meats are so "healthy." ???

Also, the red meat animals are furry and therefore cuter: cows, pigs, sheep.

Before I was vegan, I never ate meat cos I just thought it tasted gross.
eta: I meant to say red meat.

This is disgusting and sad to talk about, but pig is considered red meat? Seems like people eat poor pigs more than others...or at least talk about it.

Huh, it looks like it's technically white meat because of its color when it's cooked. I thought it was only 'white' under certain circumstances, but apparently the definition for either is variable anyway.

One reason to avoid red meat is the environmental impact. You know how it's more efficient to eat grain than to feed grain to animals? If someone isn't willing to go veg*n but still wants to reduce resource consumption, grain is more efficiently converted to meat by chickens than by larger animals. I think the water consumption is less, too, because the time to maturity is faster so you don't have to "waste" so much water and food to keep the animal alive for a long time.

Sorry if that sounds gross.

Before I became veg, my family and I wouldn't eat red meat because my mom thought red meat was really bad for you and the worst meat for you nutrition wise. They also wouldn't let me eat much processed meats either like salami, bacon, etc because of how bad for your health it is. I don't other know people's reasons for giving up red meat, but that was my family's reason. I knew better than to call myself a vegetarian though since I still ate meat. I don't know why some people think you are a vegetarian if you don't consume red meat. They are still eating other meat. Some people don't understand what a vegetarian really is. Most think you eat chicken or fish if you are vegetarian too. *sigh*

My friend told her 9 y/o daughter that she'd kick her out of the house if she chose to eat vegan.  Didn't really back it up with a solid reason, except that they are, "a meat-eatin' family."  O_o

I'm not one to interfere with someone's parenting habits, but the kid is incredibly impressionable and thinks I am just the bees knees (vegan or not).  Whenever I see her, I'm tempted to nonchalantly throw out a "Gross fact about milk of the day."  You know, but subtle.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand, discuss.

Boy, I  can hear my (southern) father in that one:
"As long as you live under MY roof, and put your feet under MY table, you'll do as I say!"
I grew to hate the phrase, "put your feet under someone's table." Like if they pay for your food, they own you body and soul?
(In his mentality, yes.)

It feels......odd......having so much stuff (posts, recipes, etc) missing from the VegWeb site. :o

Oh well. It's great to see you all once more.
