Oral Surgery

How many of you cringed as you read those two words? I'm getting some tomorrow--unfortunately later in the afternoon. As it is with surgery, I'm not allowed to eat or drink for 8 hours prior, which leaves me with 'something light' before 7am. There was a time when I could do just fine for days without food, but now a vegan, I'm finding food to be terribly necessary. What could I eat that would be light, but strengthening? Something to hold well in my bloodstream so I'm not feeling lightheaded before I even get there. . .

something with a lot of fiber...fiber will help to regulate your blood sugar for the rest of the day....regulated blood sugar=fewer cravings....if you eat something with sugar in the morning, then, you'll have higher blood sugar and more cravings/hunger for the entire day....
perhaps fixing some sort of protien/fiber shake....
like, steel cut oats, a banana, scoop of peanut butter, bit of soymilk, and some ice for consistency....
just a suggestion, other's will have more useful hints, i'm sure...

gah!  oral surgery and I are close friends (I think I've had 4-5 separate procedures....and I have 1 major one comming up and then 2 small ones after it before it's OVER)

I can't eat ANYTHING solid at the moment....I just drink and puree and crumble shit up (I bet all this surgery's led to more muscle atrophy than anything good  ::) )

Oatmeal is a really good one.  It sticks with you....look at the oatmeal thread for some tastey ways to eat it.    If you're not opposed to something "untraditional"  you could have some sort of bean dish.  Refried beans are a sometimes breakfast food for me, haha!  They have lots of fiber!

if you can, (and i know what you mean about food... i need to eat every two hours or i'll practically keel over) make yourself a little plate of food before bed, get up around 4, eat it, go back to bed and have another meal at 7am. if you're not a huge morning eater, splitting up your meals will help you get all the extra food you need instead of trying to scarf it all down at 7am.

i used to fast for ramadan when i lived in asia, and i couldn't get through the day if i didn't eat a couple times before sunrise. (which probably isn't the point  :() anyway, dates (these are GREAT for energy), a bowl of oatmeal, a protein shake, or a breakfast burrito would all work great. oooh and eat some nuts.

I will just want to know that you got through it okay and am anxious to see you back here soon.  Here is to hoping it all goes very smoothly and that the pain is not too bad and not for very long, either.

Thanks. I am taking all of these suggestions in and will probably use them all. I will plan on getting up extra early for an extra little meal, too. That seems like something I should have been able to think of myself, but have been quite foggy for the past few weeks. I've been getting some preliminary work and been getting way O-Ded on numbing drugs (I don't numb well or easily so I've been getting a whole lot). I haven't felt this bad since the last time I ate meat. I'm sure there's some kind of egg something in the medicine . . . not happy!  :( But, it's almost over. . .

Hey 7, try this home remedy for pain:  Take some ginger root, a clove or two, put them in a tea bag, and steep in boilied hot water for 5 minutes.  It's a great pain reliever to me! (I use about 1.5 tablespoons of dried gingerroot chunks and 2 cloves to make 2.5 cups of tea.  Weird amount, I know, haha!)  Pretty spicey stuff though....when I first tried it I thought, "no wonder cloves and ginger are only used in small amounts in recipes"  It's less potent tasting when chilled.

Good luck with everything, feel better soon!

Thanks Ashley. I used to have terrible migraines and I used gingerroot to disolve them, but I would take a piece of gingerroot and bite down on it and just sort of suck on the juice for a while (horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible taste). I knew that wouldn't be an option, but making a tea with it didn't occur to me. Thankyou.

By the way.....my mom had oral surgery a few months ago, and she ate some pineapple and pineapple juice during the week after her surgery and when she went for her check up the doctor was so surprised at how fast her mouth was healing and she asked my mom "did you eat pineapple or pineapple juice this week?". haha, it turns out that something in pineapple really really helps speed up the healing process (and it didn't sting either, my mom told me when she ate it). So maybe give it a try to help heal better.  :)

Isn't surprising that a dentist who knows that pineapple speeds the healing process didn't suggest that in the first place?

Peculiar indeed.

I hope you are doing okay, 7.  We're all thinking of you!!

Thankyou dearly for the well wishes. I did know that pineapple does wonders for bruises, but hadn't thought about it for this. I had four wisdom teeth cut out. Two had made significant progress growing into my cheek, so it's not just the ordinary sore gums thing here. If I could chew I'd eat pineapple, if I could swallow, I'd drink pineapple juice, I'm pretty much living off of pain meds and feeling far too out of it to even have guilt about it. My head feels pretty much like that of a beached whale. . .lots of ice. . .lots of nice people keeping after my 7 little wonders. But joy oh joy, I received the latest Scientific American today.  . .are you guys and gals aware of the poor Tazmanian Devils' troubles? My mind is way too foggy to be putting anything into writing so, I'll shush now. . .Thanks much! :)

Yay, I'm glad you're okay 7, and I'm even happier to hear that you have people helping you take care of your kids. Now you get to relax and enjoy the pain meds.  ;D

Thanks everyone.  :) I had my first post-op check-up this morning and found out that things were even worse than I knew (somethings are better left in the unknown). I am, however; feeling better. Passionfruit sorbet is my life for now! Not a bad way to go. . .

mmmm..... pasionfruit sorbet. home made?

mmmmmm . . .is right. . . home made is a little crazy. . .not me!  It's Berto's from Arizona Italian Ice, Inc. and though it's really good, I'm stuck with the Passionfruit because my co-op sold out of Bloodorange(which is what life is really all about). . .wonder how they got sold out on that so quickly this week??  ::)
