Apartment Gardening

I live in a small city apartment, and I'd like to try my hand at a little gardening. Does anyone have ideas about which herbs, and small plants hold up well in this type of locale? I was considering getting one of those premade garden boxes (the ones with the plants already partially grown in them), but if there is something better out there, I'd love to know. If you have links please post them. Thanks!

Rosemary is an hearty herb and grows well without much water. Make sure you put rocks in the bottom of the clay pot for drainage. Basil, cilantro, thyme, oregano, chives and marjoram all grow well in clay pots but I would suggest giving the basil a pot of its own. My herbs grow well outdoors between May and October, and they thrive in the west sun. I try to water them in the early evening so that they retain most of the moisture. It is also beneficial to spray your herbs with one part dish soap to 20 parts water if you notice pests attacking your greenery.
I have a large terrace and I enjoy urban gardening. Tall grasses work well to ensure privacy.

I've had limited success at apartment gardening. I killed my parsley plant but somehow I have an orchid that's blooming for the second time in six months. Go figure. I think it has something to do with the direction that my apartment is facing (east).
Thank you both for your input. I don't have much sunlight in my apartment, but I'm still going to have a go at it. I'm going to try not to kill these plants when I get them. I'm sort of a brown thumb, but hopefully all these sights will help me prepare in advance for what I'm getting into.
