IUD Issues??

Hi everyone,
For the past year I've been trying to find the "perfect" birth control. I was on the pill for many years, but managed to get pregnant (perhaps a forgotten pill..not sure), it resulted in a miscarriage. So after this I've been looking for something else. Since then I've tried the Nuva Ring, the hormones didn't work for me. I was moody, tired, and had 0 desire to have sex. So last month I got an IUD. Now I'm having my first period with the IUD and it's miserable! I'm changing my tampons every 45 min. Yesterday I bled through THREE pairs of underwear. I'm going to the doctor today, possibly to get it taken out. But my question is has anyone else had an IUD? Was it ok? Which type (I have the copper)?

And what else should I consider for birth control options? Should I just go back to the pill? Has anyone had luck with the patch or the shot?

I had a copper one put in last week and so far no issues. I suspect I'm currently starting my first period and it isn't unbearable.

One thing I've read over and over again is: WAIT. The first two or three IUD periods are apparently usually the heaviest, particularly if you've come off hormones. Your doctor might be able to prescribe you something to help with the bleeding, and make sure you're taking an iron supplement in the interim. Don't throw in the towel before you've given your body time to adjust.

i have a copper iud and it's ok, def heavier bleeding BUT i had super light bleeding to being with, so it's not the worst thing ever... i had NO cramps my last period for my first time since getting the IUD (it's been a year and a half).. i did have a bit of cramping before my period, but barely anything. my biggest beef with the iud is being afraid of ectopic pregnancy. i get bad dreams about unhealthy babies sometimes (obviously it wouldn't be alive at all if ectopic, but you know...)

I had a copper IUD put in 2 years ago, and yeah, the first couple periods are heavier. It gets better - lighter, less painful. When I first had it inserted I was due for another depo injection, so I wasn't going to get my actual period for a while, but I had a "period" in response to the placement. It was pretty heavy and a little painful. Now I'd say my periods are a *little* heavier than before, less painful (?), and I love the fact that I pretty much don't have to think about my BC method so long as the strings are there (never had an issue with that one).

I just got back from the doctor...
We're going to give it another month. He gave me the medicine to stop the bleeding a bit, magnesium tablets and a prescription painkiller. I stayed home from work yesterday and today because seriously every 45 minutes changing! It would be impossible at work since I'm a nanny and the children follow me everywhere. Really not something I want them to see  ::).

I hope next month it's better. My period seems like it will happen right when I'm flying back to the US. 13 hours of heavy period on a plane, not something I want to deal with.

I had the same issue.  My first few cycles were heavier than I have ever had.  It did eventually lessen until they were more normal.

Before the copper IUD, I only used the pill.  But I hated the hormones so that's why I chose the IUD.  I never regretted it, after about 2 years it paid for itself.

I got my IUD in November after about 10 years on bcp.  I went from emptying a "not quite full" diva cup every 24 hours to emptying an overflowing diva cup every 2-3 hours.  My period is still heavier than it was pre-IUD, but it's definitely lightened up a little each month.  Hang in there!  The benefits are worth it!

Parenthood is NOT AN OPTION.

learning how to tell where you are in your cycle (not just based on counting days, though) so that you know when you are fertile and when you can have mass amount of unprotected sex and not worry about kiddos.
