"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

Saw this bright and early this morning.

This is yet just another reason why I feed au' naturale. ;)

It should be noted that later on in the article, the FDA spokesperson says it may or may NOT be the wheat gluten that was the problem.  It may be something that came in *with* the gluten.  :o    Basically, they know nothing at this point.  (I posted the article on my site below "Resources" if you want to read the AP article. )

Anyway, cats shouldn't be eating gluten in the first place.

The thing I find most interesting about this list is that Nutro..which is considered a "premium" food by quite a few people that I know is manufactured right there next to 'Ol Roy and other "bottom of the barrel" foods...makes one wonder...

Not sure why anyone has ever associated Nutro with being a high quality or premium pet food. They push the whole "meat is the first ingredient' thing. The definition as to what "meat" is by the AAFCO is quite vague. Only those brands that use USDA quality meats, or Organic ingredients should be fed to your pets. Also.... even if meat is the first ingredient in the product, if the next 7 or 8 ingredients are wheat, soy, and corn based, it's not a premium food either. When you add those items together it means there is more filler then actual meat. Hopefully pet owners will learn about what they are feeding their pets. Most likely they will just continue to buy the same old junk.

So glad I home cook!  Passed this info on to many of my friends though!

Dave-from what I understand re Nutro, it's considered a "premium" due to it's pricing, that its not a "supermarket" food  and again that meat is the first ingredient...

I'm an avid dog-food (and people food) label reader and I've always been very suspect about the entire Nutro line (including the new Ultra)..theres quite a few items in the ingredient list that are "questionable" in a few of their foods...But much like everything else..there are people that swear "its the best".

What you and I feed our dogs is considered a "Super Premium"  in dog food jargon..

Funny thing about this recall..My best friend feeds her dogs Nutro..apparently one of the "on line dog communities" she belongs to swears Nutro Nat Choice is the best food EVER...she also gives her dogs the pouches and the canned gravy/meat bits..I've told her 20 times theres MUCH better foods out there (then again I've also told her vaccinating yearly is rediculous..but what do I know). Well for the past few months she's been complaining that her older female has been peeing in the house alot...Vet found nothing wrong with her as far as a UTI or any other reason why she would be doing this and chalked it up to old age (the dog is approx 10yrs old).

She's taking the dog to the vet next week and having her kidneys tested. Anyone want to take bets that the dog has kidney failure ? Even my best friend is like "oh crap.."

Diver-Di, yoga ferret, what do you feed your dogs? Just curious what you mean by home cook or au' naturale......I'd like to do that. I always feel sorry for my animals to have to eat that bought crap, but I don't really know what else to feed them. ???

I always tried to feed my furries in a way that way closest to their natural prey - whole mice, whole chicks, rabbit, and pieces of chickens.  Not all of them would.  ferrets impress on food at an early age and since mine were all rescues, some could not be converted.  In that cases I supplimented high-quality kibble with 100% meat - raw FreezeDried in this case usually.  A lot of breeders are doing that now as the see what a huge difference there is between the european ferrets (mostly still fed naturally) and disease-prone, fragile American ferrets. They also see a huge improvement in general health since ferrets (like cats) are obligate carnivores and can't digest wheat products.  constantly feeding them undigestible food can create a lot of health problems, obviously.

As dave-drum pointed out, mostly stuff on the "shelf" is full of wheat and rice fillers.  When I was forced to supplement with kibble I would never buy anything that didn't have meat as 3 of the first 5 ingredients.  hard to find though. :(

btw, for dog questions, Davedrum is the best resource here.  My furry companions are ferrets.  ;)  (sorry.  it's early.)

That was one of my first observations, as well, upon seeing the news piece about this recall, indeed, my vet is always naming Nutro as one of the very best foods to feed my animals...

The other main bservation I had was just how oddly secretive the reporting was about actually naming any of the 30 some-odd labels included in the recall... instead choosing to show a link to the list at the end of the segment. Perhaps I am being a little paranoid, but it seemed odd to me. When you think about how many people will actually take the time to visit the list (if they have internet access)and read it compared to how many, many more would have listened to -or seen- it on the news, I wonder if the news station was trying to keep some corporations happy by "reporting without actually reporting". Who knows....

yeah they were real  weird about releasing the list..the "report" was released yesterday and the list only today.

My news just reported that Purina and Hills are also voluntarily recalling as well..they didn't say which flavors, but I assume its the same canned meat/gravy and pouch type foods.

Also, you might want to check back on the lists..I just noticed more foods were added to the list...as of 2 minutes ago the list was up to 50 brands.

I don't know how paranoid that really is.

I always found this study/paper interesting.  Done by a harvard law student:
Deconstructing the Regulatory Façade:
Why Confused Consumers Feed their Pets Ring Dings and Krispy Kremes

paper here:  http://leda.law.harvard.edu/leda/data/784/Patrick06.html

The standards for aafco testing how viable/ healthy a processed food are frighteningly low.  They only have to test it on (for example) 10 dogs for 3 months.  If they're blood work is ok, then the food is safe.  ( http://www.aafco.org/ )

Common sense, if not experience, will tell you that you can survive off of almost anything short term.  Doesn't mean it is good for you.  Animals that eat processed food are not studied for long-term viability and effect.  A curious oversight.

Goodness gracious, which brands of food WEREN'T on the list, for goodness sakes?! Sounds like they've managed to royally screw up just about all of them. My animals back home all get kibble, so I guess they're ok... I'll still send my mum the link in case she's been supplementing anything canned/pouched.

Why do you feed your animals meat if you don't eat it?

Okay, so I don't have animals right now, I'm commenting on this, though. I feel that humans are herbivorous, therefore I feed my family and I a plant based diet. I think certain animals instinctively hunt when given a chance. That said, feeding a companion animal food the closest to it's natural choice seems to make sense. Doing alot of research first, I'd make homemade food for them and also give them high quality raw meat, by high quality I mean Not conventional, locally 'humanely' raised. That, or live on a farm and let the cats instincts take over so they find there own food. Cats are carnivores so it makes sense for them to eat animals. I'd never give my animals the crap they call pet foodin the supermarket, just like I don't give my family the processed crap they call human food in the supermarket. In short, I believe in giving my loved ones food  that most closely resembles their natural diet.

I respect everyones opinion. I am just curious to see what everyones different reasoning is.

I personally  don't beleive any animal has to eat meat as a part of their diet. When the world first started every human and animal ate vegetation. Then when the earth was flooded they were permitted to eat meat but that there proves that is is not necessary for anyone or any animal to eat meat. So basically the only reason animals or humans eat meat is because of sin which is not a proper reason that anyone should permit it for.

There are and have always been plenty of animals that ate other animals (and fish that ate other fish, and so on etc.). As far as us "humans"  and "primates" go.....well, I'll just leave that alone..I'm not going down that path...someone else can if they dare to or want to...my profile states my opinion and belief on the subject........

I do not have the bible right in front of me now so I can't quite the exact scripts but it does state that all the animals on the earth and in the sea and all humans were to eat from the herb and fruit plant that are ever yielding.

I know fish existed as well as many other animals that Now eat flesh but at one time they did not and it is not necessary for them to is how I feel.

I did read your profile Davedrum and I am happy to see that you have so many pets that you have adopted, that is great! :)

I am going to steer clear of the religious aspect but as of now, this year, today, certain animals do eat other animals.  Their digestive system is much different from humans and their bodies are able to handle meat much better than humans can.  (ie their teeth, their shorter intestines, etc.)  They expel meat much faster than humans so it is not rotting away in their colons.  So that's the scientific aspect  :)

I agree with DeuceO; you are messing with mother nature when you try to force your carnivorious pets to be vegetarian/vegan. And I really try not to tamper with the way nature intended.
