French Toast Sticks

What you need:

1/2 cup nondairy milk
1/2 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract (almond works best)
2 tablespoons oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
3 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
4 slices bread, each cut in 4 sticks
oil, as needed
syrup, to serve, optional
powdered sugar, to serve, optional

What you do:

1. Mix first 9 ingredients in bowl (through nutmeg). Dip sticks individually into mixture.
3. Over medium/low heat, on a well greased pan, lay sticks flat down. After 2 to 4 minutes turn sticks, they should be a light brown.
3. Sticks should turn easily when done. Fry for another 1 to 2 minutes before removing.
4. Sprinkle some powdered sugar and dip into syrup, if desired.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I tried this recipe. Very yummy! The bread wasnt too soggy either!

So good! I am blown away. A little soggy because I gues my bread slices were really small, but this was still ridiculously yummy.

These "french toast" sticks are delicious.  They aren't exactly like french toast but they're pretty close and better in my opinion anyway.  They're more like cinnamon sticks.  I followed the recipe exactly and they came out perfectly.  I cooked them at a medium-high temperature to make them crispier. I'll definitely make these again.  ;D

This is a good recipe.  I topped my French toast with toasted pecans and maple syrup.  In the future, I might try adding a bit of orange zest and then topping the finished product with a mixed berry compote.  ;)b

I just made these and I gave them just two stars because they were complicated in ingredients and cooking verses the french toast I grew up making (sad version). They "batter" was not thick or sweet enough to constitute a french toast batter and I went through a bit of trial and error getting them to cook through and be crunchy. Eventually med-high heat (a 5 on my oven) for a few minutes was the right setting but was a higher temp than I think french toast should require and made a more burnt-crunchy toast than just crunchy. The flavor was pretty bland but with powdered sugar and maple syrup was decent enough.

BTW the only modification I made to the recipe was I only used one tablespoon of oil (safflower). Other than that I used whole wheat flour, vanilla extract, and almond milk.

This is awesome! I didn't add any flour or cornstarch (don't have any) so instead I mixed everything together in a skillet and added arrowroot to thicken it. I added maple syrup instead of sugar, and omitted the nutmeg (couldn't find the jar haha). I used some stale flax bread and browned in a skillet then put them in the oven at 375* for 7 minutes and it came out a little crispy on the outside with no sog or mush at all. I had them with maple syrup but they didn't need it- yummy!

Yummy! My bf said they taste just like the French Toast I used to make, pre-veggie. I followed the directions of other comments and omitted the nutmeg and added some Ener-G. Also for the flour I used chikpea and it was great!

Wonderful!  My kids loved it, too!  I served this tonight for breakfast dinner!  I used french bread, and I did not slice it into sticks.  This was our family's first vegan french toast!
