French Drinking Chocolate

What you need: 

5 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 cup warm water, divided
4 tablespoons sugar
1 cup nondairy creamer (I use soy)
1 teaspoon vanilla, almond, or orange extract, optional

What you do: 

1. Combine cocoa powder, cornstarch, sugar, and 1/2 cup warm water in a small saucepan to form a smooth paste.
2. Add remaining water and creamer to the saucepan.
3. Warm over medium high, stirring frequently, heat until mixture comes to a boil. Remove from heat and add any extracts. Enjoy!!
For a less rich version, substitute nondairy milk for creamer.

Wow! This was delicious and totally satisfied my chocolate craving  ;)b next time I might use less creamer because it was much richer than I expected. I would never have guessed cornstarch as a thickener, but it worked well.


Oh, this is sooo good! I used 1/2 c water + 1/2 c coffee, and this was exactly what I needed to settle this chocolate craving.

I made this for the 1st time this morning.  I made it "to go" so that I could warm things up at work and mix them.  I forgot to put the cornstarch in the dry mix.  But, it was really yummy.  I've made my 2nd batch for a late night snack.  Who knew you could make something sooooooo yummy from home.  I absolutely love this web site.  Thanks for the recipe - perfect for the winter. :)>>>


YUM! My husband and I have been making this almost every night since it has gotten cold. 5 tablespoons makes it a bit too chocolatey for us, so we use 4, and I also add a dash of cinnamon at the end of heating and use arrowroot instead of cornstarch. I love how the addition of arrowroot makes it nice and thick. Thank you so much!  :)>>>


yummm. i cut the recipe in half and used nearly 1tblsp of brown rice syrup instead of sugar.
also, i used loads of vanilla and like a teaspoon or two of peanut butter.
was great!


This was pretty good, but I couldn't finish a whole cup, WOW. Saweet!


When I lived in Notts, UK, we used to get Soy Dream in a uht carton at Tesco.  I think it was an Alpro/ Provamel product.  Looks like now they have 2 alternatives to single cream.


Wow! just finished my first cup. I used coffee instead of water seasoned with vanilla, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. go easy on the pepper. you want to know it's there but you don't want to taste it.

This will be my new bi- monthly treat.


I had it with a slice of leftover apple pie this evening. The texture and thickness are perfect, but make sure you stir enough, because I burnt some in the bottom of the pan. I added a half a teaspoon of mint extract, but it was too much. Perhaps a quarter a teaspoon would be better.
