SO HOW'D IT GO?

I made this recipe twice. The first time I made it, it was ok because the texture was fine. The second time turned out really chewy and unusual. I don't know what I did wrong. It was fun to make but not the kind of cake I stay up all night thinking about.

this recipe is ok, not fabulous.  decent texture, not a dense, fudgy, chocolate cake or anything, and makes a good bundt style cake.  i used 1/2 cup of syrup, the recipe didn't seem to be very clear on exactly how much to use.  a little bit of a vinegar taste, but that could be because i used apple cider, not white.  i think that by nature, chocolate syrup isn't the highest quality chocolate, so perhaps one that uses cocoa powder or baking chocolate would be a little bit tastier.
