Brownies

What you need:

2 cups flour (I use enriched and whole wheat), divided
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips, optional

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease an 11x7" pan. Boil water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a thin gluey paste. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
2. Mix vegan brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and oil. Then add the flour and water mixture. Mix well.
3. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, nuts, and chocolate chips.
4. Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.
This was a really easy, and really tasty recipe. I gave some to my friends and they fell in love with them. They keep asking me to make more. I thought of maybe putting some chocolate frosting on them, but they were perfect without it. Enjoy.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

hmm... i was really prepared to absolutely LOOOVE these brownies.  unfortunately, they taste more like chocolate cake than they do brownies.  :-\  the finished batter tasted like cake, but i held out hope until the came out of the oven and cooled enough for a taste-test.

not a bad recipe for a chocolate cake (if you use an 8x8 or 9x9 pan), but for brownies i like this vegweb recipe better... http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=6478.0.  maybe i've been cooking vegan for too long and have just found some of the better recipes?  ;)

had to come back to edit this review.  these taste absolutely awesome the second day!  if i made these again, i would definitely make them a day ahead of time.

oh my gosh, these were sinfully delicious. I made them with extra-dark cocoa powder so they turned out almost black, but were perfectly chocolatey without being too sweet. I'll be making these all the time. Thank you for the recipe!

These were very good, rich and gooey. I cut the recipe in half and put it in an 8 x 8, and used whole wheat pastry flour and big chocolate chips. They even formed that nice crust brownies are supposed to have on top. Yum.

These were good. I liked them better after they had cooled a bit. I added lots of toppings: coconut, almonds, more choc chips and frosting.

The flour/water mixture does thicken quick....mix it thoroughly cold, before putting on the stove to get all the lumps out. Overall, easy and makes a large 13x9 in pan full.

HEy VS! I made these yesterday too!
I cooked mine in a 9 x 9 and they were super thick and underdone, which made them yummy-gooey-licious! I used part WW flour, so at least they had some nutritional value. The omnis liked them too.
I didn't even add chocolate chips and they were good-not as pretty as VS's of course!

Yay, l2a! Great vegan minds think alike!

VeggieJeffie,

I am making these right now. Use one of each sugar. These have turned out great for me in the past. But I haven't made them in a couple of years...these are for santa...

I'm confussed...Do I put 2 cups of sugar in?  1 of vegan and one of brown sugar?  Or just pick from either one?
