Biscuits and Gravy
Biscuits:
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup nondairy milk
3 tablespoons corn or vegetable oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice Gravy:
1 (14 ounce) package vegan sausage
4 cups nondairy milk
sage, to taste
salt and pepper, to taste
flour, as needed
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. For biscuits, mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, sugar, and cream of tartar) in a bowl.
2. Slowly add the wet ingredients (nondairy milk, vegetable oil, and lemon juice) while stirring. Knead dough, roll out, cut into circles. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet 10 to 12 minutes.
3. For gravy, cook "sausage" according to package direction, then break apart into chunks and small pieces. Add milk to the pan and heat, stirring occasionally. Season to taste.
4. Slowly add flour until thickened, stirring continuously. Pour over biscuits and enjoy!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
I just made the gravy part of this recipe, for I already have a biscuit recipe we use. With that said, it is my husband who goes bonkers for this. He is not Southern, but is Cuban born. But this is one of his most loved dishes. I have been looking for a good gravy recipe for a long time and we just found one. This is a keeper for sure.
