Orange Chicken Style Tofu

What you need:

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 pound extra firm tofu, drained and pressed, chopped into bite sized pieces
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 green onions, chopped
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
hot cooked rice, to serve

What you do:

1. Saute tofu in 2 tablespoons oil until browned. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, saute garlic and green onions in remaining 1 tablespoon oil until garlic is golden.
2. Add water, orange juice, lemon juice, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and pepper flakes. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium.
3. In a small cup or dish, mix together cornstarch and water until thoroughly blended. Pour cornstarch mixture into sauce, stirring constantly.
4. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until sauce thickens to your liking. Remove from heat and combine with tofu until completely coated. Serve over rice.
Use more or less cornstarch mixture depending on how thick you like your sauce. You can also add ginger if you like that flavor. Or orange peel or orange juice concentrate for more orange flavor. Enjoy!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This is divine!  Easy to prepare and a simple recipe to follow.  The only problem I had with this recipe is that I did not make enough.  Next time I am doubling this!

Pretty darn good ;)b  Definitely double up the sauce.  Personally, it could have stood a little less sweetness and more orange flavor.  I still went back for seconds as it was though :D

i have been a vegetarian for about a week now, and being a teen in a family of 6, it is hard to find easy quick DELICIOUS nonetheless vegetarian meals, and this was exactly what i was looking for. i love tofu, but i can't get the tofu to absorb any seasoning, the outside tastes good, but the inside is bland, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to change that?

Way to go being a vegetarian with such obstacles! ;)b I wanted to become a vegetarian many years before I did, but had a mother who was very discouraging of it. In any case I have been a vegetarian since I was 19 and am now 33. So good luck with your journey it is quite an interesting road ahead.  8)

I assumed this type of dish was cornstarch-battered and fried, so I was pleasantly surprised when this particular recipe didn't call for that, and in fact, didn't even need it.  This actually tastes very comparable to the Orange Chicken I practically grew up on, and is better than the fake chicken version at my favorite Chinese restaurant.

I made some minor adjustments:  I briefly marinated the tofu in soy sauce and baked for maybe a half hour at 375 degrees F, rather than frying (I like the texture of baked tofu, although it does take longer to make).  I also used whatever orange juice I could squeeze out of a ripe orange that needed to be used--more than the 1 1/2 T the recipe calls for, but probably not more than 3 or 4 T.  I had half a red bell pepper on hand that I sliced and sauteed with the garlic and scallions.  I also used 1 tsp of red pepper flakes because I like my food spicy, and used raw sugar because I didn't have regular brown sugar.  All said and done, I ate it with brown basmati rice and steamed broccoli and am quite satisfied.

;)b This is a keeper for us!  I will double the sauce next time because I like it a bit more saucy.  I served it over Jamsmine rice and steamed broccoli. YUMMY!!!! :)>>>

When frying up the tofu, I used sesame oil instead of olive oil. I love olive oil but I don't think this recipe & olive oil go well together.

Yum!
If I open my own restaurant/diner/cafe someday - I'm going to have this on the menu - it's delicious!

Okay, the first time I made it - I did not stick to the exact recipe - and it wasn't very good... but it had such good ratings that I tried again - and stayed more exact to the recipe - i didn't use water though - OJ in place of water - and i added orange peel - but other than that the same for everything else - oh yeah - and i doubled the amount of cornstarch b/c i like it extra sticky on the tofu - and it is very important that you fry the tofu first - it makes all the difference  ;)b

Yum! I fried my tofu with some cornstarch to make it extra crispy, added half an orange and lemon, only 4 tbs brown sugar, one jalapeno, some broccoli, and mixed it all with sticky brown rice. Next time I'll add some orange zest for more orange flavor.  ;)b
