This is the best vegan french toast recipe!  I've tried many and I was disappointed with all of them.  Thank you!  I've missed the taste of french toast since I began vegan.

This recipe was delicious!! Some advice: keep the burner on a med-low setting and let it brown slowly, then it cooks more thoroughly.

Thank you so much for this EASY and doable recipe.  I had ALL of the ingredients and my MOTHER loved it...the NONVEGIE queen.  Shes 77! She asked for seconds...  Heck, I had seconds!  yum...carmella

This is sooo good!  My paren'ts even loved it!  This is SOOO much better than french toast with eggs.  This is a keeper.  I've had it three mornings in a row now!  vegan french bread/thickly sliced is the best for this

I tried variating this a little. I added a little sugar, and some extra vanilla, cinnamon and ground nutmeg. Does anyone have a type of vegan bread they would recommend with this? I know the texas toast is the way to go, but I only had seven grain bread. It seemed to not absorbe as much...

This was surprisingly really good. I couldnt help but have seconds. I've just become vegan recently, and I've been desperately searching for foods that taste like what I'm used to eating. This more than passed the test. They were delicious! (I did have them with syrup, I don't know how that affected the taste, but it tasted really good with it, so I suggest that's how you eat them)

Delicious! Smiley This was so quick and easy, I plan to make it often.

If you haven't tried this yet, try it, this is the best french toast, I like it WAY better than the real french toast I used to eat, because it has no eggy taste but the same texture. SO YUMMY!  Archived comment by: nottowant
I used thick sliced french bread and my french toast turned out excellent!!!

Archived comment by: drummergirl
I left out the sugar and it tasted great. My kids ate 4 each. The vanilla soymilk is sweet enough

I will never miss real French toast again!!!  Thank you!

for some reason I had really bad luck with this recipe-- it came out soggy and was pretty disappointing.  I have had better luck with the French Toast (sans bananas) recipe on this site.  Just my personal experience.

Great! Easy to prepare and delicious!

super-one hint is to brown the toast in the pan at med-high heat and then stick em in the oven (on a lightly greased cookie sheet) at 400 for a few minutes to finish cooking.  this will let it cook all the way through without getting tough.

Archived comment by: doveling
i just made this for the first time.  i did like doveling said, and finishe'd them off in the oven.  i must say that this recipe is better than any other regular french toast i have ever had!  if you have not made this yet, you are missing out.

AWESOME!  Whole family loved it!  Shared the recipe with my sis and she loved it!  THANKS!!!

This is a great recipe, and as with any great recipe variations can be made to put a personal spin.  I used soft silken tofu to blend with the dipping mixture and left out the flour.  After dipping the sticks in the batter I then coated them with flour.  These turned out really wonderful.  They also work well with vegan syrup for dipping instead of powered sugar.  Thanks! Smiley

This recipe is AWSOME! This was the best french toast I have had in a long time!

Delicious! I love it! My mother even said that it was better than her own. Heh. Thanks a lot! Oh, I used sourdough bread and it was really, really good. Mmmm.

This was very good!! I halved the recipe since I was just making it for myself and I still had alot of the batter left over. I can't wait to have this again tomorrow morning with the rest of the batter!! Thanks for the recipe!

Everytime I make French Toast (not just this recipe) it turns out soggy.  What am I doing wrong?  I LOVE french toast, and I'd really like to make some that's edible.

Archived comment by: britta
Britta, here are a few suggestions:  1) Use thickly cut, stale (if possible, though I often use fresh) French bread, 2) Dont soak the bread slices in the milk mixture--just dip in and then out, making sure both sides get covered, 3) Be patient when cooking; maybe lower the heat a little and cook longer.  Hopefully, these tips will help you.  Also, I absolutely love (and so does my non-veg boyfriend) another French toast recipe from this site called French Toast (sans Bananas)--definitely, give it a try!  Good luck!

When i made this i made some changes, i am the only one who is vegan in my household so i used : 1 cup unsweetend soymilk, 4 Tbsp flour, 2 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar, Dash of  cinnimon, and i reconmend using four thick slices of bread for this. Now i can eat four slices of this french toast, but if you can't you might wanna cut it down some more..just a thaught. But besides that it is the best i have had  yet!  M

I love this site...thanks again for the wonderful recipe.  Here is my variation:  2 cups Vanilla flavored almond milk (I have never liked soy all that much), 5 TBSP whole wheat flour, 2 TBSP applesauce (instead of sugar...too sweet), dash of cinnamon, dash of nutmeg, 1TBSP ground flax seed (both as a thickener + those happy omega 3s)...as for bread, I like the multi-grain ones or the nutty ones, b/c I like the texture.  Howe'ver, my boyfriend (who makes almost all of our bread for the house) made a wonderful applesauce/cinnamon bread over the weekend, and that turned out FABULOUS for french toast (cut a little thick--of course)...lots of pure grade A maple syrup...  YUM

This is the BEST french toast recipe ever.  I had given up on ever finding a really good vegan recipe, glad I tried this one!  I also finished them off in the oven for 5 minutes.

This is great. I made it for my little brother(a VERY picky eater) and he even liked it a lot and wants me to make it for him for breakfast every morning.

Well, I don't know what I did wrong, but mine was a complete disaster. I followed the recipe exactly, but the french toast STUCK to the griddle while cooking, even though I sprayed it with cooking spray! When I'd try to flip them over, the pieces would just tear apart and created an AWFUL mess for me to clean off of my griddle (thank goodness it DID come off). I had to throw the whole batch away. I did taste the one piece I managed to partially salvage, and it was mushy and bland. Sorry, unless someone knows what went wrong, I will not be making this again.

oh no, uhblondie, what a mess!  I would guess the bread sopped up too much of the soymilk mixture.  I make this a lot and I just dip the bread in quick for a second or three on each side, and I don't let it soak too long or it gets soggy like you describe and makes a big mess.  adding more flour to thicken the soymilk might help, as well as using thicker bread, preferably day-old French bread or something pretty sturdy.  (don't know what you used, but this is just a guess.)  good job with the cooking spray, be liberal with it.

Well, I don't actually know if this recipe is any good or not.  When I made this, my two kids finished the entire batch off before I had a chance to try it!  The kids are 3 and 5, and they aren't particularly adventurous about foods.  In fact, they even wanted me to make more.  I will say that the french toast looked and smelled delicious.  Hopefully, next time I will get to try it, too.

Uhblondie, the bread NEEDS to be thickly sliced and durable and the pan must be lubricated and nonstick. Super lubricated without a non stick pan. I totally understand your french toast woes because they were mine for years before I invested in durable bread and got over my fear of a little bit of oil in the pan :-). Keep trying!

Yes bueno, these were super good :-). Pretty fool proof too because I didn't measure a d**n thing. I added about an eyeballed teaspoon of fresh lemon zest and and eyeballed teaspoon of finely chopped almonds. I used brown sugar, day old ciabatta and no cinnamon.

Just finished making this again so I can pack it in my kid's lunch tomorrow.  This time I snuck a little nibble before my little beggars realized they were done and... SO GOOD!  Maybe next time I'll try plain soy milk and a touch of almod extract, just to mix it up.  Also, I cook these on an electric stove, and keep the heat right around 3.5.  They take forever, but they are cooked just right.

Yummy!  My bread stuck to the pan too.  It was sliced thinly, but it was homemade wheat bread with some strength, so it didn't tear apart.  I would say you definitely need to use bread with some integrity.  Great recipe and very easy.  Thanks!

My husband and I had French toast as a part of our breakfast this morning. I made it using the bread that I made from the Outrageously Easy Big Bread recipe. It was very wholesome and delicious!
