Whale Wars

This is my favorite show, hands down not just for entertainment value but because I really appreciate and support Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherds' mission.  There is a forum in Food Fight to debate anything about the orgainization,

http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=32613.0

but in here those who like it, (like me!) can talk about the show.  The offical first show is on next Friday, but if you have Comcast On-Demand you can watch the first episode of season three.  Its awesome, they recieved a 5 million dollar donation from Bob Barker and got two more boats, (one speedy high-tech one to catch the harpooning ships, and one ghost-ship that was unknown to everyone.)  In the first episode they already encounter a harpoon vessel, after about 6 days into their mission.  This is refreshing after so many missions in past seasons where they don't find the whalers until right before they are going to run  out of fuel.  The crew eats vegan on board and Paul Watson has a long history of animal advocacy, he is my hero! Heres a link to catch up on episodes from past seasons on animal planet

heres a link to the Sea Shepherds' website to learn about Paul, missions, and crew members.

My favorites are Paul, (of course,) Peter Hamersdt is the first mate or something, and hes awesome too! The guys that boarded the ship that one time are pretty hard core too!

They were rushing because there's not a lot of time on that show, it happens with almost everyone who comes on. I think Larry King is genuinely interested, that wasn't the first time he's had them on. Also, he usually shows a lot of animal rights people with different viewpoints who don't always agree on the same thing.

LATEST: New Zealand anti-whaling activist Pete Bethune has been sentenced to jail for two years by a Japanese court, but it has been suspended for five years.

"The defendant is sentenced to two years' imprisonment, suspended for five years from the day of this verdict," chief judge Takashi Tawada said of Bethune, 45, a former activist of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He is expected to be deported tonight.

Sharyn Bethune, his wife, said the decision was "awesome"

She did not know when he would be coming home.

"We are letting it all sink in, we're about to open the bottle of bubbles to celebrate."

Bethune pleaded guilty last month to charges relating to the illegal boarding of a Japanese whaling ship, but not guilty to assault, after being held in custody since February, when he boarded the Japanese whaling fleet's security ship the Shonan Maru II during its annual trip south.

Bethune was captain of the US-based environmentalist group's futuristic powerboat, the Ady Gil - his former record-setting trimaran Earthrace - which sank after an earlier collision with the Shonan Maru II.

He tried to serve a citizen's arrest warrant to the captain of the Shonan Maru II over the sinking of his vessel and the attempted murder of him and his crew, but was captured.

"I deeply regret" if someone was injured in the Antarctic Ocean, he said ahead of his ruling. "I have nothing against Japanese."

At his trial in Tokyo, Bethune pleaded guilty to charges including trespassing, vandalism and holding a knife, which he used to cut netting as he climbed onto the ship from a jet ski, but he has denied the assault charge.

He was also accused of causing chemical burns to the face of a whaler with a rancid butter stink bomb and four other charges.

"What I was doing was standing up for New Zealand and Australia," he told Kyodo.

He stressed that it was "deeply offensive" for the two countries to see the Japanese hunting whales specifically in the Antarctic Ocean, and that he "wouldn't mind if it is Northern Pacific".

The Sea Shepherd group has said Bethune would no longer join its actions after taking a bow and arrows on the latest high-seas campaign, contrary to Sea Shepherd's stance of "aggressive but non-violent direct action".

what exactly does this mean?  he doesn't have to go to jail for 5 years?  I don't get it...they keep saying he's free, but only for a little while, right?

He's back home now. He might have to go back, he might not. We'll just have to wait and see.

gotcha!  my husband explained it to me too - he said that he will only get jail time if NZ decides to follow through with the Japanese sentence....
so whatever, as long as he's free!

I am watching it now and it's the episode where the Ady Gil gets run over. I knew this happened but seriously....how the hell did the Japanese get away with doing that????? They ran over a small boat that was just sitting there and couldn't move and they don't get in trouble at all????? There were people in there and they could clearly see that! They even sprayed the water cannons on them afterwards! They tried to kill them and nothing....how does that happen? Wth is wrong with these governments?!?!?!

Sorry, very emotional and pissed off about this. It's all because of money, money, money. The Japanese have been bribing governments so that they can get away with all of this and.....ugh, none of this makes sense.

Dude Minke you ROCK!!! It was the dreaded episode where the Ady gets hit...(its not a spoiler they show it right in the beginning) its horrible, Pete cries like the whole time after, and its seriously scary.  The Ady was totally stopped, with the engine off when the boat came over and hit it.  Anyways, won't give away anymore since you haven't seen it, I mean we all know what happens.  Next time they have previews of Pete boarding the deck of the boat, and we all know what happens there too. I just looked for the episode and couldn't find it yet.  But they often replay the episodes on animal planet, and sometimes the newer ones come onto the internet after awhile.

oh oops, I was reading back a page, glad you already found it.  What a horrrible episode to see. I can not believe the whalers not only got away with that, but then held Pete as a "terrorist" thats insane!

Exactly! I think when you run over a small boat that is completely stopped and with people inside and then spray water cannons on the survivors after you've crushed their boat.....that is a terrorist! They tried to kill them, they completely ruined someones boat and they get nothing. ???

Btw- did you guys hear that they're retiring the butyric acid? http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/editorial-100715-1.html
I think it's a good move. It was a great tool in the beginning but since the Japanese have added the nets, water cannons and LRAD it has become less effective to almost useless. As the Japanese have been growing increasingly more bold and violent, I'm glad to see that SS is developing new strategies.

I think the sea sheperds are a bunch of sandal wearing misfits and it is embarrassing to watch them try to do anything.

Paul Watson is a fat ass loser who couldn't make it in the real world.

I just ate a whale sandwich and it was awesome.

peace out you vegan bastards.

Anyways,

Can they catch a break or what?! I knew about the Ady already, but I had no idea about the other small boats and the helicopter! What a nightmare! I am relieved they were still so successful after so many problems this season!

I've never seen the show, but a coworker told me she went vegetarian after watching an all day marathon of Whale Wars!

I wasn't able to watch this episode because I was visiting the college, I have an idea what happened now though! I remember last episode they were having problems with the helicopter I believe.

AC- I'm glad they did! The cool thing about the show is that while I agree with the whole save the whales sentiment, it wasn't something I "remebered" to think about very much.  The show, and the pictures of the whales, makes me think about it most days (and helps me remeber to donate a little money every once in awhile.) (And the whole crew eats all vegan on the ship!)
Minke- sorry if I wrecked it for you, I wasn't prepared for everything that happened, (not to make it sound that dramatic,) but I wish they would just get the equiptment working, and find the whalers already!

Lol, it's fine, I know how you feel. My heart almost stopped when they were having trouble with the helicopter.
