I want to preface this by saying that I think things like this are GREAT for women who have health problems when it comes to their period, i.e. intense pain, inability to move, faintness, etc.

However, I think it's going to do more harm than good in the long run for women who are healthy and suffer from no problems but just take it to not have their period. There have been studies done (I'll look for the links when I get a chance) about why women live longer than men. What it comes down to is iron levels. Women have less iron in their bodies than men precisely because we bleed every month. While iron is good, a build up of iron leads to many health problems. Many of these health problems are the ones men die from - far earlier than women.

Women who do not have their periods also become susceptible to a build up of iron, leading to a host of health problems.

Personally, I have no problem with my period. It lasts 3 days and is relatively light. I actually kind of like it (yea, I'm weird). So, I would never put synthetic hormones into my body. As they say, if it ain't broke - don't fix it.

I think that what is natural is most healthy. I can't help but wonder whether all the health problems people have, all the diseases out there, the cancers, etc., ... isn't from messing with mother nature and putting junk into our bodies (and into the environment). It just doesn't sound like a good idea to me - to wipe out millions of years of evolutionary biology with one pill. Surely that must have SOME consequences.

Now, like I said, for those women suffering from problems - this is great. But, the vast majority of women who have no problems ... I can't help but wonder what the consequences will be.

Yeah, iron is a pro-oxidant, and I have even heard dieticians tell me that it's healthier in the long run to be slightly on the anemic side. They speculate that might also be one of the reasons why vegetarians live longer, because they tend to have lower iron levels.

CYETS--- it will become your new best friend! just be warned-- they do take a little practice to get used to but once you get it down YAY!! it took me about 3 cycles to be a diva-pro.  i will provide one tip that works for me, for getting it out. they say to "pinch" it to release the seal but this never worked for me. then my friend who also uses one told me she pinches and twists. this works great! if you don't break the "suction" it will feel like your pulling your uterus out-- because it would be similar to plunging your vagina i guess.

Baypuppy, you crack me up! ;D

Thanks Baypuppy!  I will know who to ask if I have any questions once I get it!  I'm so excited!  (Apparently I need to get out more... ::))

You won't regret your Diva Cup purchase.  Like baypuppy says, don't give up after your first try--it takes a little practice.  I practiced when I wasn't on my period--less messy.  I too can help with any questions you have once you get it.  One thing I will tell you now.  I think the directions that come with the cup say not to cut off the little stem.  Well, the stem pinched me a bit so I cut it off anyway and it hasn't been a problem.  I've read lots of other women prefer the stem cut off too. Other than that, it's all about the angle you use to put it in (for me, I prefer to angle it very low so that it presses the lower part of the vagina as it slides in--hope that's not too much information!!).

Once you have any questions, you can feel free to send me a message and I'll try to help.  I've also heard that Diva Cup's customer service is wonderful and will help you with any problems too.

This made me laugh too!   ;D  ...not that it would be funny to feel that.   :o

I'm excited about getting the Diva cup now, too.  I'd never heard of it so thanks for sharing everyone!

It's nice to see women not afraid to say the word "vagina" and discuss the topic openly.  It seems so taboo, like its a bad thing in our culture.   Like what you mentioned, Baypuppy... Western misogyny...is it just a Western tradition though?   :-\    Reminds me a bit of when I saw "The Vagina Monologues."

Hopefully 5 converters!  I had never heard of this before, but I'm probably going to buy one when my current box of tampons runs out.

Well, actually 6 converts.  I was going to keep my purchase to myself until I realized that it was possibly because I was afraid to say the word "vagina."  I don't want to be like that!

tradition is usually a code to cover up inequality and other abuses

I heard someone speak about tradition once. I can't remember the wording, but it was somewhat like this: Tradition is something that keeps a culture from falling backwards, from reverting to ways that did not work as well. However, once a tradition doesn't serve its purpose to the fullest anymore and actually holds the culture back from evolving into something more effective, it is time to move beyond it.

Make that 7 converts! I went to my local HFS this weekend to get one (the Diva website listed them specifically) and they were out! I was so bummed. Any of you other converts in the Boston area and got there before me?  ;) ;) I will keep checking!

Thanks for sharing! Oh, and entertaining! Every time I read this thread I laugh my ass off  ;D ;D

Make that 8! Like Lotus, I'm waiting for my giant Costco box of tampons to run out (I had a coupon, so I bought in bulk...) and then it's Diva cup all the way! Whoever brought up the cup should contact them and demand some sort of commission--at $30+ a cup, that's a nice sale via Vegweb!

For those who can't find them where they live, I noticed that Amazon sells them for a few bucks cheaper...just in case you just can't wait ;)

There'll be nine next weekend.  My HFS was closed today because of Memorial Day.  Okay, y'all, I'm holding you to it.  If I have questions, I'll be posting them here.

;D  So, if you have to say it to own it:  vagina.

Hey, I just found the Divacup at SmartBOMB.com (which is where I get my vitamins) for $27.63 PLUS I am on the mailing list and have a coupon code for 10% off if anyone else is interested!  ;) I don't know if it will work but you can try.
SmartBOMB has wonderful customer service as well. Once I was missing a bottle from a shipment and they sent me the bottle and since they couldn't send it the overnight method as they wanted (due to our address) they added another free bottle for the inconvenience.

"Save an extra 10%
Next time you shop with SMARTbomb.com, enter coupon code: j567 at the checkout and you will receive an extra 10% off of our already low prices!.  Please note:this coupon expires soon and is for our mailing list customers only. EXPIRES June 15!"

I also have a giant Costco box, but I couldn't wait for it to run out!  That could be years...  Anyone know of some kind of bizarre art project or MacGyver-style contraption I could make with them?  (You know, this would make an excellent commercial for the Diva Cup...)  I don't suppose a women's shelter would accept a donation of them, since the box is opened  :-\
