Too Fat to Adopt a child

i saw this couple interviewed on the news the other night.  i'm torn.. i see that they are probably nice people and while the news mainly said the excuse was that the are more likely to have health problems that the child would have to deal with, i see it more as they are more likely to raise a child that also has unhealthy eating patterns too.

go!

That's brilliant.  Leave the kids in foster care (or UK's equivalent) where they'll be lost in the system.  That's much better than being in a caring home.

thats a shame that some children will not have a home because of this.  something is better than nothing.  unhealthy food is better than no food.  i think something better would be to have adoptive parents take lessons on health, but you cant just single out people who are obese, because there are a lot of unhealthy skinny people too.  it certainly would cost a lot more, but it would help solve the problem, not just deal with the problem.

i like that idea kelsi- sorta of like nutrition counseling for raising a healthy child, like marriage counseling before you get married.  it is terrible that kids would miss out on having a loving family, even if it does mean they don't eat the healthiest foods.  i wonder if this couple will use this as an incentive to lose weight, if there is a child for them at the end of it?

I'd bet you they don't eat the healthiest food in foster care, either.

I'm surprised that's even legal.  Isn't that blatantly discriminatory?

I mean, christ, get the kids a home.  That's really sad.

I'm half-way on this. Even though it does seem discriminatory and yes, kids deserve a loving home, there's a different between being overweight and being morbidly obese. The guy says "I'm not a couch potato and I don't sit eating takeaways every night" but you don't magically become obese overnight. I hope, as PPC said, they'll use this as an motivating factor in shedding some weight, for themselves and a future foster kid.

I like that idea, you should pitch it to production companies.

I was quite overweight for a while.  It turned out that I was severely hypothyroid.  During that time I did a lot of hiking, I backpacked, and ate super healthy (and only up to 1,200 calories a day on top of healthy food choices).  All of that didn't mean that I wasn't overweight.  Just because someone is overweight it doesn't mean they have an unhealthy lifestyle.  If they have an office like CPS over there, they should do a home visit and see what's in their cupboards and interview them about their daily activities.

both my parents are overwieght, my mom morbidly obese, I'm sure. I don't think she got that bad until after having 3 kids, but I still turned out fine & if I had childern I wouldn't hesitate to let her watch them.

there are many skinny people with terrible food habits, I call them skinny fat people.

I looked at the link....they're not HUGE and I've seen tons of way fatter biological parents walking around with their children walking around Walmart shopping....so let them adopt. That is straight bollocks. At least they don't have ana and won't be starving their children. So they like to eat. Apparently they're not druggies or alcoholics..... there are so many orphans out there and not so many people wanting to adopt. This is sad.

yeah i agree lubi -  i know people who are totally thin and eat pretty healthily but then feed their kids pretty crappy cus the kids act picky and the parents don't push them enough to try new things.  it drives me nuts!

So are overweight folks who eat healthy called fat skinny people?  :)

Exactly.  That is why I find it discriminatory.  It would be more effective to inventory the couple's lifestyle choices.  Base it on actions, not appearance.

I used to be one of those! I had the worst diet in hs and college and never gained a pound. I put on weight once i went veg!

I rescind my previous statement and instead suggest that the dietary habits of all potential adoptive parents be checked out, regardless of their weight or BMI.

Good point, Lubi!

So many hoops to jump through already and really how are you going to really be sure that the food they have in the cabinets when the social worker comes out is really the food the kids are going to eat?  When we had the social worker out I was an omni, could our adoption had an issue if I had been a veg#n then, I would like to think not, but you never know.

Most potential adoptive parents talk to other parents who have gone through the process.  So if they know that what they eat will be taken into consideration, they will change the food in the cabinets to adopt.  Murderers? They won't want to go through the lengthly process.

Only related to the adoption story because of weight:  I read an article about Kevin Pittsnogle.  He's a former college ball player.  He's now a middle school teacher and semi-considering another crack at pro-b-ball, but he gained weight that he'd have to lose first.

Pittsnogle's desire also might be the least of his worries. According to the story, his weight has ballooned to about 300 pounds, and pro teams are telling him he needs to lose weight to get back in the game. (What, no vegan restaurants in Martinsburg? Sorry. That was mean.)

I wish being vegan meant losing weight.
