Oprah's going vegan for 21 days!

This is really really exciting.

http://www2.oprah.com/foodhome/food/cleanse/blog/blog_main.jhtml

And it's not just a health thing!  She talks in her journal about it, saying:

"How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?

Whoa!  Who knows what will come of it, but even the thought of legions of Oprah lovers joining her in a 21 day vegan diet is really thrilling to me.

WoooooW!  That is fabulous!  I was just listening to an old "vegetarian food for thought" podcast today (per your recommendation), and she was talking about the influence Oprah could have by going vegan.  Awesome.

I thought of that same episode!  Yay Vegetarian Food for Thought!  And Oprah!

I can hear the meat, dairy, and egg industries rumbling... They're going to make a fuss about this.

YAY!  I hope a lot of people take her lead.  This could be really great for veganism and I hope a lot of people also try out being vegan.  One thing I don't like about the entire thing is that it sounds a little like she's more concerned with the cleansing of the body rather than being vegan as a lifestyle...

i think you're right. there's no way i can see those industries letting such an icon badmouth them even a LITTLE bit.

i don't hate Oprah,  i don't really care for her either... but i think it would be fantastic if she chose a book for her book club that would get people thinking a little more about eating meat, dairy and eggs. maybe something like "Diet for a new America"

Well, she's not being blatantly anti-meat.  She's not even calling it vegan.  Or vegetarian.  She's blanketing it all under "animal products."

She got in trouble that one time because she definitively maligned the Texas Cattle ranchers, and there are food defamation laws in that state.  But I don't think the industries can do a damn thing about this one because she isn't saying "your product is bad" outright.  They've no legal right to make a fuss.  What are they going to say, "Boo hoo, Oprah made my sales drop!"  We should only be so lucky.  Besides, that Texas case was dismissed, so surely any similar troubles that arose would be short-lived and pitifully embarrassing for those industries.

And yeah, it is framed in the context of a cleanse, but from what I hear, she even talked on her show about the idea of not wearing leather and things like that.  The whole spiritual part of it is promising to me.  I do believe that Oprah is a compassionate person, so hopefully she will focus on that a lot--being a better person because you're conscious of what you are eating.  It could be a really great message.

Really, is there a better way to reach millions of people?

This is great! Hey, if she can get millions to read William Faulkner ... imagine what message she would send by going without animal products for 21 days. Wow.

I am praying that she feels better than ever, loses weight, and falls in love with delicious vegan food forever!  Honestly, think how awesome and influential it would be if she stuck with it forever...that woman basically controls the world ...

I never watch TV, but I can't wait to hear how this goes for her and the reaction of the media.  Exciting!

This got me thinking about what WOULDN'T happen if she does it for 21 days..and then stops. I don't watch Oprah..so I don't know if she would say anything BAD about it..but even if she just says...nothing...all of those Oprah devotees will never even try/think twice about it! If she says something negative, that will be even worse! Let's hope it goes well..and that some people will be inspired!
I think it has great potential.  ???

One thing that's reassuring is that she has someone cooking for her.  So it's not as if she won't know what to eat and will panic and then become the bitter "I tried being vegan and it sucked" person.  She'll be eating well, and she's not even eating anything too fancy.  She has menus and recipes going up on her site as well.  It's really interactive with the viewers, so I feel like she won't just abandon it.

Yeah, her chef was on Topchef a while ago. I feel like I had some negative thoughts about him...but I dunno.  :o ('I feel like I had some thoughts..' is a weird sentence)

He he... KMK are you a compulsive Oprah watcher?  :)>>> That one hour break is getting me through my comps this month (and I've turned compulsive as well), and I thought of VW when she talked about it. She's doing it as a cleanse, and prefaced the whole thing with "Well, what do you eat?." I thought she was being pretty fair in trying it out, and as an omni, fair in skepticism about what the change would mean in terms of what she would be able to eat. It was interesting that they talked about being a conscious consumer, too. One thing, unrelated, was that I thought they were hinting at people not pooping enough, but then they never talked about it. Man, I totally have a thing about talking about poop. I think it's so funny. And, like, something a five year old would do. And that makes it funnier. POOP! ;D

Nothing like poop talk to bring us all together!  ;D

I rarely watch Oprah, actually.  I didn't see the episode.  I do think she's a decent celebrity personality, though, in the big scheme of things.

I actually got this news from the PPK.
Don't tell bp.

from the article:

"Week One: Monday
Well, I feel like I got baptized in Vegan Land today. Kathy Freston sent her chef, Tal Ronnen, to help me and three friends at Harpo who are doing the 21-day cleanse.

Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. "What's left?" I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes. — Oprah "

sounds like it's going well so far. i do hope though (which Allychristine already mentioned), that she doesn't go right back to her regular routine after the 21 days. that would send the message that she's just dismissing the whole thing as something to do once in a while when you need a cleanse and can bear down for a few weeks, but not something to do as a lifestyle. note that in addition to animal products she's also giving up gluten, alcohol, sugar and caffeine.

Yeah....that article sounds great on one hand...but then also sounds very drastic and 'dietish'...(that she's giving up all those things for 21 days.).

We can only hope!

I must admit something here..
I was reading along in the article that laur b posted...and I guess didn't even notice that it ended (with -Oprah), and I saw Allychristine....and for 1/2 of a second I was like huhhhhhhhh....why is my name there...

YEAH  :whatever:

I never paid attention to Oprah and purposely avoided books on her Book Club list. (I'm just not that much into bestsellers and such), until now.

Has anyone here read that book Oprah is basing her diet on - Quantum Wellness, by Kathy Freston? If so, what do you like or dislike about it?

"The ultimate guide to complete well-being, Quantum Wellness is an instructive book on how to reach the highest level of health and contentment through small, focused changes."
