this makes me sad :( :( :(

http://awesome.goodmagazine.com/features/009/009buyingorganic.html

i knew about a couple of these, but some of them are just ridiculous (for example, silk being owned by the largest dairy distributor). i know a lot of these companies have great products, but that also means supporting the ginormous companies who own them (and giving money to people who are not in line with my values).
what are yall's thoughts on this?

The really sad part is most of those "brands" did start out as small, indpendent companies and got bought up by the big corporations.  I say buy as much good food as you need.  Boycott the bad stuff and encourage the big companies to make the good food.    Unfortunately, about 85-90% or so of people in general are not in line with veg*n values.  So if you only ate what is produced by people who share your values, you'd probably starve.  The least processed food is best and has less corporate involvement, I think.

And Taco Bell is owned by Kraft.  :(

I'd  recommend trying to buy as much fruits and veggies from your local farmers (from your farmers' markets and other avenues) as possible.  Support the independent small people so we continue to have options instead of only having to rely on these big corporations that only look out for their own profit.  And it's better to eat more whole fruits and veggies than to eat processed foods anyway- even if the processed food is vegan.

Right on.  ;)b  Whole foods are the best in lots of ways.

right, less refined=better. i try to eat as many whole foods as possible, and i hardly ever buy pre-packaged veggie "meat" or soymilk (i make my own since i'm so clearly hardcore)...but when you're swamped with studying and working sometimes you can't beat the convenience of popping a veggie burger in the microwave.
i just realized the tempeh i buy is made by whitewave. booooooo.

and now i realize why they only sell those brands in places like wal-mart. how progressive.  ::)

silk is owned by a dairly company? I guess that explains why it's the soymilk they use at starbucks, my campus eateries, etc.

I'm just glad MY brand of soymilk is canadian, organic, and INDEPENDENT. woo hoo.
