Sense of smell/taste issues

I don't expect to get an "answer", I'm just putting this out there because I don't know how to research it.
I love the smell of coconut. I love the taste of coconut. But lately, coconut-scented toiletries (bath jel, cologne etc) just smell "dusty" to me. As in unpleasant. It doesn't matter who the manufacturer is or the brand or the product...I get the unpleasant whiff of a dusty, closed room. Coconut milk or grated coconut, thank goodness, smells normal. I haven't had access to pure coconut oil for a while so I can't say as to that.

What could cause this all of a sudden, I wonder?

Then today...I made some hummus with blackeyed peas. I soaked the beans, tossed the soaking water and boiled them as usual. Made the hummus the same way I always do (and the ingredients smelled normal). Comes time for a taster, and it tasted a bit musty. I thought, since I buy my beans and lentils in bulk bins, that maybe I bought some from a batch that was a bit old...it happens. But then I ate lunch; DH had made a rice dish for me while I cleaned. Once again, I got that "musty" taste. It's gotta be my nose or tastebuds!! So then I remembered about the coconut thing.

Am I going nuts here? I know my mother said she had pretty much lost her sense of smell by the last time I saw her (she was in her 70's). I hope that's not what's up.

Are you pregnant?  That certainly changed my sense of taste and smell.

No, actually pre menopausal. Hm. Might be a factor. Change is change.

Yeast or other fungal infection of the nasal cavities and sinuses can do this.  If you breathe into someone else's face, do they smell it too?  Sounds gross but it is a good way to figure out if it's a real smell or something else.

You may want to eliminate all sugar from your diet, if there is any, and see if that helps.

Yeah this is true.  The change in taste and smell during pregnancy is because of hormonal shift so I don't see why a different type of hormonal shift couldn't cause a similar thing.  Wouldn't hurt to ask about, anyway.

Aaaand today the hummus etc tastes normal. As I thought, it's "just me."  ::) Coconut stuff still smells funny though. Sigh.

I've heard that a zinc deficiency can totally mess with your sense of taste. I'm not sure about smell, though, or how taste changes other than many things suddenly tasting awful.

I had forgotten this, and I bet that's what it is because I've had it before, back in highschool!!
