The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

theo, that sucks that you have injuries, really hope the physio can sort something out for you!  Bruising/injury on the ball of your foot sounds agonising for dancing!

I'm also amused by the mental image of you trailing soy sauce up and down the pool.... : )

hh, writing a book is such a massive undertaking, I'm so impressed!
Also impressed that after two months off you are within 2% of your previous fitness!  You'll be striding ahead in no time!

I am still plodding along with p90x, I'm in a recovery/rest week at the moment, and have been feeling some pretty major fatigue so I will admit it's been a little more rest and a little less recovery, but I'm still hoping to kick into phase III on Saturday for the last four weeks of high impact stuff.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do in the new year once I'm finished, I might just mix up the workouts at my own pace, but I'm also contemplating looking online for some new/different workouts to start... we'll see!

You're amazing, oww.

I posted this in Aimless, but I ordered a bench today.  If you remember from a waaaayyy long time ago when I got The Book of Muscle, I wasn't able to do the full routines because I couldn't figure out how to jimmy a weight bench.  I needed to be able to lay down on something and have my arms below me for some of the weight exercises.  Amazon has a Black Friday sale today (tomorrow is our major shopping day in the States where all of the stores have big discounts, but some online sales started today) that included a bench I could actually afford (kind of).  I'm excited!

regular price $98.54, on sale for $69.99 + no sales tax + free shipping

sweet deal!  we have muttered about one day getting me a bench for home as well, but I don't know that it will ever happen, space-wise.  Do you already have the weights you need?  Awesomesauce!  : )

It's Friday today, I'm psyching myself up already for chest and back tomorrow morning.

Is chest & back easier for you than arms and legs?

Space is an issue for me, too.  It'll have to go in the front room for the next few years.  My parents used to visit me annually, but they haven't been here for two years now.  I'm thinking of taking out the twin beds from the second bedroom, putting in a sleeper sofa, and moving it down there - but it'll be years before I can afford a sleeper sofa.

chest and back is super tiring, because it's two big muscle groups, and pretty much all the exercises are full body-weight deals.  So, two sets each of six different types of push up, two sets each of three different types of pull up, and two sets of each of three different 'weighted' back exercises.

Shoulders and arms, by comparison, is lots of 'little' exercises, so you work those muscles hard, but your whole body doesn't get so tired.

Legs is actually legs and back, so more of the pull ups, and the leg workout is pretty darn tiring as well.  I'm never sure whether chest/back or legs/back is my favourite...

My husband has a whole room for his drums, but unless the bench folded completely flat and could be tucked away somewhere, I don't see us making any room for one.  It's not a big priority though, just something we've talked about as a 'down the track' kind of thing...

How long do you think you'll have to wait for it to arrive?  Exciting!!!

So I totally dropped the ball after a couple of minor spinal strains and used them as an excuse to take a hiatus from working out....a 2 month hiatus.....so lame of me.  I started over today with Perfect Abs, 8 minute strengthening segment, and then 15 minutes on the old Buns of Steel.  So pathetic but my stamina is shot to shit from lack of exercise.    :-[

^ This.

I need to ask my local library a question, so I suppose I'll walk there tomorrow and then extend it into a proper 5+ mile walk.  Oh, and THE WEIGHT BENCH CAME TODAY.  I'll assemble it tomorrow, but YAY!

;)b

I walked my daughter to work this morning so that was over 3 miles round trip and then I ran a bazillion errands so they are all out of the way and I'll have nothing to do after work this week except come home and workout!

How have your workouts been going, Storm?

I now have extra outlets in my garage, which means that we can plug in the new treadmill we got for FREE even though the dr told me that i couldn't use it and to just stick to the elyptical b/c of my knee and we will be able to plug in some music, so i will be getting on it, prolly tomorrow, hubby is excited. I did however make my daughter bend over so i could kick her in the rear tai-bo style and i did quite a few reps, and switched legs... felt like a decent mini work out, and also put her in her place muahaha!  >:D

I am very jellys of all of you guys and your dedication. I was supposed to go on a hike on sunday but my damn knee has been giving me hell lately. and HH, i Reallllllllllllllly would love to hike with you, i would prolly be way slower than you even though you say you are slow, and i would have to turn around and walk back half way through.

oww - i thought that picture of you was awesome.

How have your workouts been going, Storm?

Monday was good but yesterday I had to back down on the intensity some.  My arthritis has been flaring up off and on and it's really pissing me off.  It's really bad in my fingers and toes right now but fortunately that doesn't keep me from doing Perfect Abs.  I shall prevail!

Jessi, I am just as jealous of your treadmill as I am of HH's weight bench!  I wish I had a place to put equipment in my house, but it's so tiny.  I only have an 8 ft. by 5 ft. space to workout in in my living room and my landlord's stuff fills up 2/3rds of my garage so no space there either.  It's sucky!

Buns of Steel and 17 minutes of TurboFire....yes, I'm attempting it again.  Last time I tried to do all the steps and strained my spine and then rode that as a cheesy excuse to stop working out for a while.  This time I'm only doing the steps I know won't stress my fusion.  When she shifts to something that I can't/shouldn't do, I simply substitute a step I can do that works the same muscles.  I'm determined to finish the entire 55 minute segment this time.  I never got past 25 minutes last time.

to push yourself too hard storm, doing 25 mins a day is better than injuring yourself.

still haven't done anything due to the fact that the garage is overflowing and i can't get to my equipment. hubby is supposed to be sorting it out, and his sister wants to come over twice a week to work out with me. AND one of the classes i signed up for is a PE class (i seriously needed to fill my schedule with 2 credits and this is all that was left.) soooooooooooo hello manditory or fail a class working out! haha maybe i will actually get off my rear and do something now.

I concur.  I used to go all out at the gym so I got too sore to workout.  This time around I'm pacing myself to build endurance and muscle - it's much more rewarding.

On Tuesday, I walked for an hour at a 10% grade.  It wasn't very challenging, so today I tried 10.5%.  I'll stick with it for a few more days and then go up to 11%.  Before I got sick for two straight months, I was walking pretty easily at 12%, so hopefully I'm back there soon enough and working my way to 15%.

What kind of PE class did you sign up for, Jess?

it is just a general 2 credit push me to part time class. I believe that after the orientation i just come and go to the gym when i want to and complete so many hours scanning my card in and out. I do have 2 hours off between classes, so i will already be down there and have time to spare. no luck yet in the garage gym.... and just got given a 55 gallon fish tank today so there is even less room in there.

Yesterday, 10 minute segment of BOS and 30 minutes of TurboFire 55EZ segment and all I'm saying is DAMN, that's one brutal workout.

I said this on facebook, but have you fellow body rockers heard of fitocracy?
It's pretty fun, you log your exercise and get points and level up like a game.
I can invite anyone who would be interested in some extra competitive motivation!

So, my exercise has almost exclusively been running.  I have been such a fatty lard arse and not going to the gym, except for pump class once a week.  So only doing a couple of runs a week and one gym class = blobby shelloid.

I got the New Rules of Lifting for Women out of the library and am going to give that a go.  I'd never heard of it before, but now I've read it and researched it online I've discovered it seems to be quite popular and has some pretty good results.  I'm gonna give the workouts a go, but not follow the diet advice - it relies a lot on protein powder - for drinks and just to add to meals.  I don't like the idea of that, it just sounds wrong to me to up protein by adding such a processed thing to your diet.
However, the nutrition section of the book is quite interesting and I'll take some advice from it - upping protein in general - just because I have been a bit of a carb fiend recently.
I also like that the book isn't recommending working out every single day because I just know I won't do that.  It recommends 2 or ideally 3 workouts a week, which I think I can handle.

I'm gonna start it tomorrow, but it will probably go out the window during March as N's parents are here and I feel bad if I spend evenings at the gym rather than with them when they've made the effort to fly half way round the world to see us!
