The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

w00t, Shea!  Congrats!  You should get another trophy for your abs.

shea, you are so  unbelievably fit!

I'm going to go for a 5km-ish run tomorrow and Sunday, and maybe do some p90x weights as well. Next week my husband is going away on holiday without me : /  so my schedule will be a bit different and I am going to try and make it work to go for a short run before work each day, fingers crossed it's not shitty and rainy!

Holy sh*t, TurboFire kicked my ass yesterday!  Ten minutes in I was dripping sweat all over the floor.

How did your run go, oww?  Are you done having to work weekends for the time being?

Storm, I don't know what TurboFire is, but it sounds intense.

I meant to go for an 18 mile (29 km) walk yesterday.  I was so tired I didn't do anything (some days are like that because of my thyroid), so I laid on my bed and stared at the ceiling.  I modified it to 13 miles (21 km) for this morning, but couldn't find motivation and reduced it to 8 miles (13 km).  Better than nothing, I say, and at least a few miles of it was a 12+% grade.  I wanted to do more because I'm going hiking with my hiking partner next weekend and want to kick butt without being miserable.

I have a 100 ounce (3 liter) Platypus hydration bag.  Before going on hikes longer than 10 miles (16 km) or so, I'm going to need to get a second one.  Something I've discovered is I drink a. lot. of water while walking and even more when legitimately hiking.

TurboFire is part of the Beachbody "family", like P90X.  It's a high intensity cardio program and I'm telling you what, it's not for pussies!

Edit: clearly I'm a pussy since I haven't made it past 25 minutes of the 55 EZ class. :-[

good runs on Saturday and Sunday but we have had a major storm the last two days so I have opted for staying dry and warm inside : /
No weekend work for me in the foreseeable future, which is nice, though the extra cash was certainly appreciated.

I drink a looooot of water too.  Is there not anywhere you can re-fill your water when you are out walking?  I imagine carrying two of those water bags would be kind of awkward/heavy...

Storm, I have heard TurboFire is pretty badarse, you're a champion for starting it!  It's much more fast paced and cardio-focussed than a lot of the p90x stuff I think.

i finally ran today!

awesome!  : )

w00t for running!

My hiking partner and I were going to hike to the top of Mount San Jacinto (11 miles / 2,300-foot elevation gain; ~18 km / 700 m) next weekend, but now she can't do it until the end of the month, so I'm going to solo it to Dollar Lake (12 miles / 2,500-foot elevation gain; ~19 km / 760 m) because it's about the same length and percent grade.  Before I moved to SoCal, I had no idea it wasn't just freeways and palm trees.

I gave myself a break today and did Tae Bo instead of TurboFire.  Billy's advanced workout is less intense than Chalene's EZ workout!

envious of your huge hikes, hh! : )

yah for running, vh!

I haven't heard of tae bo in years!  An advanced workout is not really a 'break', Storm!

this weekend I think I will do plyometrics tomorrow morning, and probably chest and back and ab ripper on Sunday... unless it's fine, when I will probably go for a run and skip the ab ripper...

Back on TurboFire after some back strain.  With my spinal history, I took 5 days down to recover...there will be no more fusions in my future.

Was it sunny enough for a run, oww?

Storm - five days to recover from your video workout?

I didn't go to Dollar Lake.  I was talked into Dry Lake.  It's the same trail, but a different split -> 13 miles roundtrip with a 2,400 elevation gain.  I averaged a 30 minute mile going uphill (actually, I made really good time during the first 4-1/2 miles, but in the last two miles I had switchbacks and I got so tired I had to pick a tree I could see in front of me to walk to so I could rest again) and 19 minute miles going downhill.  It was supposed to rain, so I spent 8 minutes at Dry Lake before heading back because I had to cross creeks. It took me 3h 15m to get up the trail and 2h 05m to get down.

i ran today with my little sister. who, without practice, was able to run the mile in like 6 minutes. and i lasted longer than she did. woooo!!! and we ran at the same pace.

Dang, vh!  Never in my life have I run a six minute mile.  In high school I about killed myself to run an eight-minute mile, but that only happened once.  You're fast!
