The Rock-Your-Body Fitness Thread

We talk about health and exercise in a lot of different threads.  It's time for a one-stop shop.

As you all have read ad nauseam, I have a super slow metabolism so I'm always looking for ways to increase my fitness.

I'm going to join a gym next Wednesday (most likely).  Is it true that I should leave a day between working muscle groups?  I'll likely only be at the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so I'm not sure what the best excercises are if I'm only going to be working that area once.  Like, Wednesday for legs or front and Thursdays for arms or back.  Something like that?  I'll have about an hour between work and when yoga starts and the gym will be relatively empty, so I'll have plenty of time and access to equipment.

----------

I recently read that dehydration leads to a drop on body temperature and a drop in temp triggers a body to store fat.  Of all the dagnabbit, underhanded, flea-analogue bitten things!  My normal temp is in the 97.1 - 97.3 F (36.2 - 36.3 C) range.

I finally got to use the eliptical! I only went on it for 20 mins, but I was sweating like crazy when I was done. I felt a little proud to have soaked through my shirt :)  I feel like I got a real workout last night and was pleasently tired afterwards. Yay eliptical!!!

Yay!  :D  Soaking your shirt front and back is a sign of awesomeness.

Thanks for the encouragement HH!!  I know that 5 pounds for you are simply muscle, you have been doing awesome for it to be anything else.

Yesterday I did my 12 miles on the bike.  Today I did my regular 12, 20 and 8 miles.  I felt like I slacked off a bit on the mileage but just wasnt feeling it today, plus my iPod died 2 miles in! Ugh.  Of course for those two miles it felt like my tibia had been beaten on with a hammer but I pedaled through it.

I am just hoping I dont walk too too much this weekend and aggravate it more.  Though it could have been a simple weather ache.  *rolls eyes*

You're fit to begin with, so 4" is amazing.  I read an article by a personal trainer who said that the stars he trains are all heavier than they look, because of muscle.

Most likely it is muscle.

I wish it was all muscle!  :D

I'm hoping, realistically, that it breaks down into 2 pounds of menstrual cycle temporary weight.....

Well, thank you... but it is hard for me to see any changes.  And I'll fluctuate up to 5lbs at certain points in my cycle. :-/

Playing with doggehs is the best!

I didn't do anything yesterday.  I think I hurt my serratus anterior muscle (right below my arm pit).  I'm not sure if I should bypass trap/lat exercises for a while or do them with less weight.  I'm going to try it with less/no added weight.

My unfit legs still hurt from Monday's 40 minutes at 80-100% intensity.  Tuesday on the elliptical was hard and Thursday was really hard.  Having four days off might help my legs recover, so I don't mind that I won't be back to the gym until Tuesday.

I did 30 minutes of core workouts to sparkpeople videos and then went on the elliptical for 10 minutes on Friday. On Saturday i went with a few members of my local vegetarian group to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary to help with filling in some holes, digging, moving rocks around, that sort of thing (moderate physical labor), for about 3 hours. Then I went swimming for about an hour, where I mostly did laps. It was way more fun than I made it sound here :)

Today is Sunday and I'm pooped. I'm taking the day off the rest and make some healthy food to eat for the rest of the week, yays!

That is OK... this was me today.  I'll be working out hard tomorrow morning to kick off another intense week.  I figure if you have 1 or 2 lazy days a week (and don't go crazy with food) it'll all even out.

i manage to get to the gym 5-6 times a week at teh moment. feeling pretty good. just about gained all the weight i lost in europe back.  i have been going for 8 years now though. it's a good habit to get into. although i think i've gone beyod "habitual" into "total addict"

today was legs day. barbell squats (170kg), partial dead lift (170kg), leg extensions (106kg), lying leg curls (56kg) and standing calf raises (150kg). all exercises were 3 sets of 8-12 reps. its hard to walk up stairs now ...

Then you're a good person to ask.  When your legs get sore, do you do anything to them to reduce the soreness or just work out the next time with sore legs?  I've just been going with sore legs, but I can't do as much as I can when my legs aren't sore.  I don't know if that means I'm building muscle while doing less because my muscles started out sore or if doing less means I'm a lazy bum.

I so cant get motivated today.  This weekend was long, hot and a ton of walking.  I just feel like a slug.

I need to head downstairs an work out but motivation is nonexistent.  *whines*

me, less so, but I can let you know that because of the way he structures his workouts, leg exercises only come around every four to five days, so by that time they're normally a little less sore.
When he does have a muscle group that is too sore/tender to exercise properly then will normally just skip ahead to the next workout rather than stressing already sore muscles. Is that kinda helpful?

Yes.  That was.  Thanks.  I've been away from the gym for four days and my legs are just beginning to hurt less.  I think I started with too much too soon.  Tomorrow will be my first day at the gym this week (I can only go Monday through Thursday and I was out of town today).  I'll do a moderately-paced walk on the treadmill tomorrow.  It won't be much of a workout, but at least it will keep me in the practice of going.  And my upper body is dodgy, too.  I joined a gym to develop my kayaking muscles, but my serratus anterior still hurts so much that I'm not really using my left arm/hand for anything.  I think I'll also do upper body, but with no added weight.  And if it hurts, I'll stop.

Ahhhh I run a half marathon in less than 3 weeks and have procrastinated up until this past week to start training!  So far my furthest run is only 4-5 miles and that was a struggle.  Blerg.  I need to start doing double workouts.

You're cutting it close, foof.  Although you're in pretty good shape to begin with, so you'll be ready when it's time.

Have you been following Eddie Iz Running?  Eddie Izzard is running (or hoping to run) 30 miles a day, six days a week, for seven weeks, in order to run about 1,100 miles around the UK.  He's raising money for charity.

Thanks for the vote of confidence HH.  Originally I thought since the race is in Virginia Beach there would be no hills, but then remembered that along the cost means lots of wind, which is worse.  Oh well, I'll make sure to stick to a training regime until then.

Have not heard of Eddie Iz Running, but good for him!  Wow, if he can do that there is no reason I shouldn't be able to run 13.1 miles once.

Monday was a day of procrastination.  I did not work out at all.  I feel guilty but a day off where I didnt have to do anything (including no walking outside in the heat for 5 to 8 hours) felt nice.

Today I did 10 minutes stretching, 20 minutes lifting and 13 miles on the bike. I figure Monday was a missed cardio day even if I back to back my lifting days.  Today, back on board!  I promise.
