Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

dude, where is the recipe? i've been reading your blog on and off... a quick link would be nice!  :-*

the blue in the smoothie soup is ... i don' tknow. i don't think there are blueberries in that one.

Are you asking me about the carrot pecan burgers? Sometimes I get confused...I posted it in a blog from this week--I want to say in 19... but I'll just put it in here--it's simple

1 cup grated/processed carrots
1 portabella cap processed (or any other kind of musroom--about a cup of em)
1/4-1/2 onion corsly chopped
1/2 cup corsely chopped

mix it all together real good--thow in some spices, salt, pepper--whatever to taste
form patties (I used a 1/3 measuring cup) place on your dehydrator--I had mine in for about 14 hours
you want them dry but not falling apart--unless you want crumbles. mine turned dark--but not black like the mushroom meatballs

They are sooooo yummy wrapped in lettuce wi/ tomato and onion--just like a burger! Now if only i had the patience to make sun cheese...

I got 5 patties out of it. they shrink a bit--but they fit really well into romaine lettuce leaves! I'm eating my last two tonight for dinner--I should really get off my butt and go make some more!!!

At market today I got a bunch of sunflower shoots! OMG! They are the shit! I've never had them before and I am now in looooove with them--I've never seen them anywhere else though and they are a bit pricy--$14 a pound--that's almost what it costs for 1 brownie (*see cooking forum to get that joke!). I got about half a bag for $3--but still, it's not a lot, maybe a few salads--anyways--does any one knowanything about theses? Where can I find them? They are sooooo yummy!

if so, this website says how to DIY!

I made a drink today - a whole cantaloupe (well, cut up) and strawberries juiced in my vita mix. it was soo good!

i should have taken a pic.

Yep! Those are them! And they are beyond yummy! Yeah--I saw I could order the seed to sprout--but I'm just not into sprouting...*lazy* I'm going to have to check my WF's maybe they have them in or can get them in!

Yum--your drink sounds great! I like just chucking fruit into my bleder and drinking it too--so efficent!

My diet today qualifies as raw - so far.  I've had two pounds of blueberries.  For reference (because I just looked it up), that's 519 calories worth of blueberries.  They were delicious and I'm stuffed.

I'm dehydrating the carrot pecan burgers as I type.

1.  I added a dash of liquid smoke and worcestershire sauce.  They're really good.

2.  They're not holding together all that well.  What's the trick?

I add a smidge of water to mine to get it bit more "doughy" for lack of a better word and when I form the patties I use a measuring cup and squish it all in there real good so they come out nice and patty shaped. I hope yours turn out as yummy as mine have! I really liek these alot!

Hi Guys!  I was offline over the weekend, did you miss me?! ;D

I'm a big fan of the sunflower sprouts too!  There is a little organic farm on the other coast of FL that produces/sprouts them and one of the HFSs on my side of the state carries them.  I'm lazy too, Capture, I'd rather let someone else do the sprouting.

I made more sun dried tomato flax crackers over the weekend but added extra basil this time and they were really good.....especially loaded with bruschetta.  I also bought some raw vegan kimchee at Abby's and pigged on that all weekend.  I did commit a major raw violation by having a glass of red wine but food wise, I did pretty well.  I made my daughter a big pot of unbeef stew and like any good cook, did taste it to see if it was seasoned properly.  That was almost a big mistake because it was so good I wanted it!  I did manage to curb my craving, at least for now.  I admit that I'm getting a bit bored with the raw cuisine and I'm totally jonesing for some hot food.  I don't even care what it is, I just want hot food!  My goal is to stick with the raw until the family gathering on Saturday.

Oh! Yea--tasting cooked food was probably a bad idea--man that must have been soooo hard not to just pig out on it! Kuddos for you for not giving in!!!!!

Yes--warm food is a big one for me too--lately I've been warmingthngs up on the dehydrator--but it does takea long time andthings only ever go to luke warm, but I prefer luke warm soup to cold any day!

Oh! Kimchee! That sounds good--I haven't found any that is raw in my area :( But, I only have 7 days left! It's going to be so weird trying to figure out what to eat next monday. I still have that loaf of manna bread in the freezer--I think I'll thaw that and slowly eat some of it--that's probably a good inbetween raw/cooked food.

I'm going to have to be careful Saturday, since that will begin my transition back to cooked foods.  The family gathering cuisine is going to be Indian this time and I do so love Indian food, but I'm afraid if it don't transition back slowly I'll regret it in a very big way.  Perhaps I'll just kind of taste everything, but stick with salad and naan.....yay, I'll be able to have bread again!

Capture, even after you transition back I think we should keep this thread alive.  I plan to keep a lot of raw foods in my diet and I'd love to keep hearing about the raw foods you continue to try.

I hear you on the transition thing--I'm pretty worried what it will do to my GI track! Good luck on Saturday--yeah--I can't imagine Indian food being a great way to come off of raw! I looooove indian food too--but even when I'm not raw it's a little chancy *LOL* be carefull or we might be hearing about your dinner under the "Gross" thread *lol*

Oh I feel your pain Storm!  I have to suffer through pancakes every morning becouse that is what my soon to be three year old wants!  and my daughter eats hers with strawberry jam and Im so temped.  Im totally bored with what I have been eating and I am like you counting down the days!  Oh well this raw food venture has been good and I do feel good so I guess that counts for something AND an aquaintence of mine says she will trade me an excaliber dehydrator for one of my roosters that I hate anyway so I think I will take her up on the offer.  What do you guys think?
