Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

:'( Raw has injured me! OK, so Storm sent me some teflex sheets for my dehydrator (thank you!) but they were slightly too large so I needed to trim them down--so I'm cutting away with a utility knif and of course it slips and cuts into my index finger at the base--totally nicked a vein! Blood ever where! *blerg* I did get one cut down--but I think I'll hold off on the other 2 for a bit...you know..gotta rebuild my blood supply!

So! I made up some raw crackers and a vegi-loaf for thanksgiving! Here's what's in them!

1/2 cup ground flax
1/2 med onion
1/2 cup ground carrot
1/2 cup ground broccli
1/2 cup ground cauliflower
2 tbls nama shoyu
1 tbls EVOO

I got about 15 good sized crackers and then ran out of room on the teflex sheet so to the remainder (about 1/2 of the whole) I added some dried cherries and some crushed pecans--I molded this into a mini loaf pan! It's going to take a million years for it to dehydrate--but I figured it might be ready by thanksgiving! If it is I plan to serve it with raw cranberry relish and today I found a recipe for green bean casserole! I also have that pumpkin butter recipe to make too! Sounds like a yummy dinner--too bad I'll be all alone *wa wa waaaaaa*

Oh Storm! I haven't forgotten about snding you the raw coaco nibs--I'll get them sent out this weekend!

I'm so sorry you sliced your finger up Capture.  :'(
I'm B+ if you need a blood transfusion!

I've got to cut down on my avocado intake.  I've gone through 5 avocados in 2 days! :o  I'm such a pig!  Yesterday I made the gingerbread cookies from goneraw.  They were okay, but weren't really sweet at all.  The recipe uses orange juice to sweeten and it really didn't work.  I think I'll try making them again and add a little bit of agave.

My daughter didn't last long doing raw.  She didn't start until Monday and she bailed Wednesday night and had a big bowl of pasta.  I sort of figured she wouldn't last too long, which kind of sucks for me since I now have to prepare two different dinners and smell hers while it's cooking.  :(

What!?! That sucks your daughter bailed! Why do you have to make her meals? Can't she prepare her own food?? I don't think it's fair!!

OMG! I can not tell you what a world of difference those teflex sheets makes! My vegi crackers are yummy and DON"T have parchment paper stuck to them! I'm experimented now with banana-chocolate-flax cookies..hopefully they will work out! I'll let you know!

I am not sure how I overlooked this thread.
Looking to incorporate more raw into my diet.
Love raw veggies and still slacking in the fruit department.
Have basically the same dehydrator as capture just no clue how to use it. Have no instructions for it so it has been collecting dust since I got it.

Check out www.goneraw.com there are a lot of dehydrator recipes on there! Basicaly you plug it in and put stuff on it--pretty simple! I like to dry tomatoes, banana chips, blueberries, etc. and I also like making crackers! It's also very handy to warm stuff up on! It's so cold up hre right now--I don't know what I would di if every thing I ate had to be cold *BRR*

Capture: I'm going to mail out that book Monday.

I made banana icecream yesterday for breakfast (ran frozen bananas through my champion) and mixed raw cashew butter with it. It was sooooooooo good. The cashew butter had the texture of cookie dough. My son loved it too. My daughter preferred plain banana. YUM.

Thanks Dustin! I'll keep an eye out for it :) *Such a doll!*

EMG--there are a few good raw recipes in the VW resources and www.goneraw.com has thousands! I'm not so great following recipes--especial raw ones--basically, I see a recipe I like, gather up the ingredients and then prepare how ever I want! Plus, with raw--it all ends up being fruits an veggies any ways, so usually I just give up around week 3 and eat whole *lol*

With that said--my favorite raw recipes right now are November Porriage--which I posted in this thread a page or so back and naked burritos! For my naked burritos I finely shred a whole head of romaine lettuce, make fresh salsa with tomatoes, onion, peppers (all kinds!), simple guac with 1 avocado and some seasoning and then I blend it all together! Last night I added some vegi crackers I made for a bit of crunch too!

Well! Raw day 7 and I feel great! Last night was rough though--it was so cold at the protest and my body just couldn't handle it. Did you know that on raw your core body temperature actually drops??? (Brenden Braizer Thrive diet) Well, I believe it because I've lived in michigan my whole life and never had problems with the cold--last night for the first time I was seriously concerned about losing a finger or toe! i had to leasve early and I felt so bad! The other thing was my friends were talking about pizza and it made me crave it so bad--not that I let myself have pizza while cooked anyways--but still, it's frustrating to want that kind of food and know that I won't be able to really replicate the taste--but I think I might try one of the pizza crusts in "Raw Truth" I just need to find one with out grain--I'm concerned that the buck wheat groats, rye and other grains I can get in bulk are not actually raw and no one seems to know at either Whole Foods or the co-op.

off to the farmers market!

I suppose I could make her fix her own dinner, but I'd still have to smell it and probably clean up after her....you know how teenagers are....messy!  I thought she'd last a little bit longer than she did on raw, but oh well, what can you do?

I'm so glad the teflex sheets are working out for you.  I'm going to throw another batch of crackers on mine today.  I didn't know that about your core body temperature dropping on a raw diet.  I guess down here in the Sunshine state I don't have to worry about that too much.  I actually have a low core temperature anyway (97.2).

Almost at the end of week one and going strong.  I'm missing my Cuban toast in the mornings, but I'm feeling pretty good!  :)

Have goneraw bmd for later.
Thanks Capture
As for the cold I am not doing well with it myself.
Had frostbite on my feet when I was younger and I think that might be part of the problem.
I am going to pull the dehydrator out and start with some fruit.
Been adjusting my diet for the last year to be more healthy and feel I am almost there.
Most days my diet is 60 % percent raw.
Usually only cook at night.

I had success with my chocolate-banana-flax cookie/crackers! They taste really good! Only dissapointing thing is that it takes sooo long to make stuf,, and you get so little out of it...oh well--keeps me from binging I guess!

I went to the FM today and picked up:

Orange and red organic tomatoes
Blue and white potatoes
Mutsu apples
Beets
Onions

I'm attempting to make potato chips as we speaks--I'll let you know how that turns out!

Oh--not raw related--I totally saw a guy from my dreams at the FM today! He was so beautiful and I wanted to approach him, but I seriosly couldn't, I was over whelmed by him and was smiling/blushing so furiously that I had to stay away from him...*le sigh* Maybe I'll see him again next Saturday!

Also NRR--Storm who's this married guy that is bugging you?? Want me to lay some muscle on him??

He's a friend (he and his wife), and I've always known he had a little thing for me but he never tried to do anything about it before.  Next time I get him alone I'm going to have a little conversation with him.  I value his friendship and I don't want any hard feelings, but I'm not a home wrecker.  He caught me off guard yesterday and I didn't handle it well.  I was kind of in shock.  If he fails to respond in the appropriate manner after our conversation he will get a knee to the nuts.

Ok today I gotta say I ate pretty close to 90 % raw.
I am drinking a beer right now so  I know that probably does not count.  :)
The piece of celery I ate before the beer gave it a odd taste.
Went to the market earlier and loaded up on some decent produce.
Fruit is a little on the blah side but did find some decent tangelos so I am happy.
Biggest selling items around here are Apples, Bananas and Pears.
For some reason they seem to sell allot of the seedless fruit here.
Will not touch GMO type fruit. Yuck

I hope you knee him to the nuts anways--I just want to hear you tell that story *lol*!

Side note--shipped out nibs to ya! Hope you can find something to do with them!

Got my juicer tonight and rearranged my kitchen so that all my raw appliances are on the same counter--it is a great set up and with hope it will make preparing things easier to!

TMI--I am really farty! I think it's the onions from the FM--they are very sharp and I put them in everything...*sigh*

Does cooking onions help?  Could you put them in the dehydrator for a while just to warm them up?

Nice!  Consider the beer a minor infraction.  I am still having a morning cup of coffee and that is a raw no no.  People wouldn't want to be around me if I didn't have it and I have cut it down to only 1 cup instead of 2.

Capture, you are so sweet!  Advanced thank you for the cacao nibs.

Cooking does help as it kills the enzymes that can produce the gas--so dehydrating the will not help since I am specifically trying to not kill them! Such a catch 22! I don't want to be gassy but I don't want to kill the little buggers that makes me fart! *lol* Perhps it is a good thing after all that I am single... *sigh*

You are most welcome my dear friend Storm! Just don't complain to me when you find out they tatse like bark! Hahaha!

I had the best smoothie today--I had bits of fruit to use up so I just tossed it all into my blender--1 1/2 bananas, 3 mandrian orange segments, 2 strawberries and 5 blackberries--then I added in my chocolate super grasses smoothie mix (it's raw!!) and voila! Seriously. best smoothie I've had in a looooong time! Yum yum!

I just had some raw broccoli with guacamole.....wanna have a farting contest?  I'll win!

OK--So I'm on day 8 and actually starting to have some raw concerns. I am terribly cold, which I think I can handle--but it's no fun given that it is winter up here now--and it's coming on like a lion! Second thing that is troubing me is my mental clarity--I've been really out of it the last two days--yesterday I drove down a one way street the wrong way (and it's a street I've been driving on for over 10 years so it's not like I didn't know...), and today I got light headed after drinking a kombucha and at a pot luck people almost didn't make any sense to me--I wasn't aware when people were speaking to me, I wasn't able to articulate very well, adn by the end I had just with drawn into my self and tried to just listen to the conversation...

I do still feel physically well--but the fuzzy brain thing is new--I remember getting a little loopy near the end of Rawgust--but not like this and not so early. I have no intentions of going off raw--just voicing my concerns. I think I'm going to try and up my cals--I have been really low considering it's all raw fruits/veggies/nuts...maybe like 1500 +/- a day. I'll need to be more careful about that. And I did drop all of my pre-raw weight gain already...I'll weigh in tomorrow and see where I'm at--if I'm under 108 then I'll have to add in more avocados and nuts!

I'll report back ...
