You Have GOT to F'n Be Kidding Me!!!

Why, omnis? WHY??!!

I have personally tasted roasted salted peanuts with the ingredients consisting of salt and roasted peanuts... and they were quite lovely.

So WHY must I specify 'Please don't put boiled hooves, skin, and tendons into my mothrf'n roasted salted peanuts'??!! Take me through the process, someone... I'm trying to understand the thinking here, and coming up completely blank.

Needless to say, I was glad I checked... and didn't buy these. GELATIN IN PEANUTS PEEVES ME OFF!

Grrrr!  >:(

I can't read the label in that pic, but that looks like a loooong ingredient list for something as simple as roasted, salted peanuts.  What's in it besides peanuts, salt, and gelatin (gelatin? ???)?  Lucky you checked the label.  I wouldn't have thought they'd sneak dead animal goo into something like peanuts.

"Peanuts, sea salt, sugar, corn starch, monosodium glutamate (flavor enhancer), gelatin, torula yeast, corn syrup solids, paprika, onion and garlic powders, spices, natural flavor."

(then, below this:)

"CONTAINS : PEANUTS"

???

Well duh... the peanuts here are simultaneously damned obvious and *not* the problem, guys!! But, you know, thanks for the warning & all... otherwise, people with food allergies might not know that this product contains (eye roll!) peanuts.

Gah! humans!

Lol, gotta love allergy warnings.  If you're allergic to peanuts, and you're dumb enough to buy something that clearly says "PEANUTS" in big letters on the front, the warning on the back will not be not enough to save you.

That's a lot of ingredients for salted peanuts.  I think I'll stick with my store brand, 2-ingredient salted peanuts.

I think they put geatin in everything then. Because once I got sunflower seeds and they had gelatin in them.

Well then... I must kick them ALL in the shins. Fine!  :P

Ironically, the cheapo 'store brand' peanuts adjacent to these had 'peanuts, peanut oil, sea salt'... the end! so... apparently Planters wants me to pay *extra* for the privilege of having gelatin, MSG, and 'natural flavor' (whatever that means) inserted into my food...

Pass!

Yeah, the sunflower seeds made me so angry. The only store that has an off brand of roasted sunflower seeds is Kroger, and it's hit-or-miss on them. But when they're good, they're gooood.

Yeah, I have to congratulate the warnings that tell you that whatever "may contain traces of nuts etc." because they used the same machinery.
But I bought a jar of chunky PB and guess what? Contains PEANUTS!
Well, hell. I thought it tasted weird! Imagine, peanut butter with peanuts in it.

I could never understand that ingredient list.  Why do you need gelatine and corn syrup solids to make roasted peanuts?  That is one reason why I buy from the bulk bins at whole foods and organic nuts if the store brand is no better then planters.  I wonder how many people read the ingredient and think twice before buying these peanuts.

Not many, Monkey7. Not many read the ingredients because they don't care. Only health-conscious people read labels, which is why the manufactures get away with the nonsense ingredients as cheap fillers.

I'd never seen "torula yeast" before so I googled. Looky here:
Torula, in its inactive form (usually labeled as torula yeast), is widely used as a flavouring in processed foods and pet foods. It is produced from wood sugars, as a byproduct of paper production. It is pasteurized and spray-dried to produce a fine, light grayish-brown powder with a slightly yeasty odor and gentle, slightly meaty taste.

Wood byproducts in our food! Oh, yum.

Torula finds accepted use in Europe and California for the organic control of olive flies. When dissolved in water, it serves as a food attractant, with or without additional pheremone lures, in McPhail and OLIPE traps, which drown the insects. In field trials in Sonoma County, California, mass trappings reduced damage to an average of 30% compared to almost 90% in untreated controls.

So rest easy, you won't have any pesky olive flies in your tummy if you eat this natural (?) insect repellant all over your peanuts!!

Maybe the gelatin is to get the rest of the crap they added to stick on.

Hey Yabbit, just remember one of my favorite wood by-products...maple syrup!  :P

Maple syrup is tree blood, not some gross gunge left after they make paper! Yarg!

I used to love Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts (and sunflower seeds even more so) before I went vegetarian.  I always assumed that the gelatin helped the tasty stuff stick on the peanuts (that is also my assumption about why there's milk in almost all flavored potato chips...).  The tasty stuff, including the wood pulp by product (which is an attractant, not a repellent, for the insects), was what I liked about them.

Most other brands of dry roasted peanuts don't have as much flavoring on them and don't have gelatin.  I'm also fairly certain that Planter's lightly salted dry roasted peanuts are just peanuts and salt.

I was just about to post about the lightly salted peanuts. I looked at them yesterday and didn't see any gelatin.

Yikes, gelatin in peanuts! :o It seems to sneak into the most unsuspecting foods! I probably wouldn't have even looked since it's peanuts, geez! And yeah, we get a kick out of peanut butter jars giving us the warning that they contain peanuts, lol! How dumb do they think we are? ???

i bought a big pack of romaine at costco and on the package it said vegan and gluten free... um duh lettuce is vegan! unless they start adding animal crap to that too!

Yeah, I love the "gluten free" symbol on stuff like prechopped salad, frozen spinach, etc. The amazing thing would be if it contained gluten...but with gelatin in peanuts, who knows what could happen!!
