Question for vegwebbers and admin

greetings.  traffic here has increased enormously, so too the number of new threads.  i wonder if it would simplify matters to break threads up into categories...eg. cooking, food product information, health, polls, cafe recommendations etc.  this would facilitate the location of more direct routes for users.  feedback please.

Hey!  Can I add a comment too?  The profile pages are a little cluttered since the makeover (this does not reflect the other updates however, which are magnificent).  I'm not sure if anyone else agrees, but I liked it when all that edit/view stuff was in the left margin of the page.  Making a "toolbar" along the top would even be an improvement.  In its current form it might be okay for those with large screens, but for me (12" iBook screen) it's really cramped!  Anyone else feeling this?

PS.  Adagio:  I think I like your idea, it's just, I come here so often I read all the posts regardless of their topic--so for me, the big mess of often unrelated posts is not a problem.  Maybe if we did split them up into groups,  a "posts from all categories" group could be included too?  That would make things tidy but also agreeable to all... unless of course you're against the extra click.  ;)

thanks for your response idioglossia.  i used to read everything but because there are now so many new posts these days i have become a little more selective re. relevancy to me, my interest in particular subjects, experience/ knowledge that may be helpful to others.

i would still like to hear from others.  don't be shy.....

Being new, I, originally, devoured every thread on this board (yes it took me many many hours over a few days! :o)  trying to learn all I could about 1) what certain things were in the recipes and 2) what advice others with more experience had to offer as to how to make sure I was eating healthy and getting all the nutrients I need.  Because of this board, though, I became more exposed to and aware of all the animal (well, that was obvious but...::)), environmental, moral, and ethical benefits this diet and way of life promote and I am so thankful for it!

So I like Idioglossia's idea of the option of all the threads still offerred together even if they were also offerred as separate groups.  Some threads might prove to be a challenge as to what area to place them since some start out with one topic but then lead to another. I think it's neat in a lot of those cases because they show how so many things are interconnected and also how unique and yet accepting  (ie: great :)) the people here on this site are!  I try to read them all since I never know what interesting tidbit of information I can pick up from a topic, although I can see what you mean - it is hard to sometimes with so many.  :)

Does anyone have gmail?  They arrange each group of emails into conversations- like instead of each comment being it's own post, you would just have a few subjects and be able to see the thread when you clicked on it.

That might not make sense, but if anyone has gmail, you'll know what I'm talking about.  It might be a good way to organize this...

Like idioglossia, I read EVERY post. Cannot help myself.  I do it not only because everyone is so interesting, but also because I never know what post will have a tidbit that will inform me about something I didn't know I wanted to know. :D If admin does reorganize, I also would like to have a link to "all posts."

yeah, i've mentioned that several times.
It's really cluttered, and even worse there's not even a working SEARCH function!
at best,it's a skeletal search function:

basic search only goes thro the recipes which means the same topics in the 'forum' get repeatedly constantly instead of people being able to find the topic and add their own thoughts and questions o rmerely find the answers the want.

and using "advanced" search...  :o

it's just a really poor search engine and interface.

from where I've admin'ed before, you have to be careful about over categorizing.  as one topic can naturally lead to other topics not necessarily in that subforum.  a few subforums would be obviously very helpful here tho.  For example: "Activism","Recipes", and the necessary catchall "General".  You can always add one or two more categories later on.

i agree with the post categories.... and  it would be nice to see if there was a new post under each category too at the start page. the least amount of pages to load, the better... some of us STILL have dial-up!!

ive seen on other sites: health related categories, recipes, product reviews, green living, activism, veg travel, etc.
i do like how the new posts are moved to the top of the line also.

I was thinking the same thing. Then I saw this thread. I post on two martial arts forums, and they are broken up in categories. It makes it so much easier to find posts that you are most interested in.

I find it so easy to zip down the topics and open the ones I am interested in.  I think we may miss out on much if we put things in categories as many times, it starts out as one thing and ends as another.  Maybe I just have too much time on my hands although I really have next to no time.

I love the board as it is and I commend the wonderful people running it.

Just IMHO!  :)

HEY IDIOGLOSSIA, great to see you post!
I'm not computer literate enough to contribute to this thread but I do find the constant changes hard to handle. The last batch of changes were good, though. I just wish that we could find a working formula and stick with it, out of mercy to the older folks among us!! (Physically or mentally! Whatever!)
