Finally have an appointment with a nutritionist...UPDATE

So I made an appt with the nutritionist for Wed morning 10 AM CET. I am going to have full workup (blood and urine) and ask for diet advice. I wrote down some questions (including of course "the soy question") and hope I can get some good guidelines. I'm not interested in some expensive, strict day-by-day diet (one cup of this on Tuesday, 2 oz of that on Wednesday) but rather some sensible guidelines of the type they give diabetics etc.

I am also scared. In the first place, I'm agoraphobic and this person is an unknown, and a doctor. DH is going with me. In the second, he's going to weigh me and do all that. And I haven't weighed for a couple of weeks AND it's TTOTM.
Oy.

I will update this when I get my self together after Wed as I know I'm not the only low-thyroid sufferer on VW.

Pray if you've got 'em. (We don't have a shaky, terrified looking emoticon or I'd insert it here.)

The good news is that a doctor only cares about your weight in terms of your total health.  It's just an info tool he'll use to help you.  Are you diebetic?  I don't think I knew that.  I just knew that we were both hypothyroid.  I just bought a bath scale.  I haven't had one in a while.  I thought checking my weight would be a good second check on how my thyroid replacement is doing.

I am so excited for you.  I hope you get good, useful guidelines.  And thyroid info that you can share (  ::) ).

No, sorry--unclear. Not diabetic, just hypothyroid. But I mean they give diabetics such practical guidelines, that's the kind of thing I want.

Hey Yabbit! I will be thinking positive thoughts for you. I get totally stressed out with any medical stuff too. Just try to remember that the doctor is there to HELP you. If that doesn't work, try to cope with lots of deep breaths.

I'm sure things will go well, and hopefully you will have some sound advice that can help you manage your condition.

*hugs*

Hey, Yabbit!

This is a great thing you're doing for yourself. I think I can understand the fear/unease associated with this sort of thing, so I commend you for having the balls (or guts, or ovaries, if you prefer) to do it. I know you'll thank yourself later.....just think of all the future stress and discomfort you'll spare yourself by getting your diet and health on the right track!

You're in my thoughts.  :-*

I will light a candle for you Yabbit.  I'm not a big fan of doctors either, but sometimes they are necessary.

So far, his recommendations:

--Soy Isoflavons are OK, just take them at a different time, like at night or midafternoon, so they don't interfere with med absorption.

--Every morning before breakfast, juice of one fresh orange/lemon/grapefruit (your choice) in a big glass of water, drink it down and then proceed.

--Tofu and soy products are verboten until I get some of the weight off. They are packed with nutrients that are too accesible to my slow metabolism.

--Corn is not my friend. Very calorie packed (see soy above).

--Chew you food slowly, give your saliva a chance.

--Green tea is also not my friend, as hypothyroid folks retain water. GT is not a diuretic if you already have this sort of problem. (I knew that by empirical experimentation, already.)

I like that he only expexts me to lose about 10-11 kg, not the 15-20 my gynae would like to see. I had got down to his stipulated weight for me several yrs ago, if only I had known, and stopped agonising, I might have learned to maintain it then. And the thyroid problem wouldn't have been so emotionally devastating.

ETA: I forgot; when he was doing the BMI and the measuring etc., he had me stand on the scale with my back to the numbers. I love that. He said "Any scale will work that way and it cuts down on the tears." Of course when weighing self, I'll have to look at it, but it's a good idea if you have a buddy, not to see the numbers coming.

What is the citrus in water supposed to accomplish?  ???

Soy products are packed w/ NUTRIENTS that you're not supposed to have? Or calories?

I think that they're packed with easily metabolized nutrients, so your body doesn't have to work that hard to break them down.

I didn't know that about soy, but that's why I avoid products with flour, starchy foods, or things like puffed rice - the food's too easily metabolized.  There are a couple of things I eat with flour and starch, but things like bread can't be a part of my everyday diet.

AC I believe the citrus water is to cleans your system. You suppose to take it on an empty stomach so its absorbtion is not affected by food.
Yabbit I'm surprised the nutritionalist didn't tell you to wait at least 1/2 an hour before eating.
My mom has been told not to eat soy by her accupuncturist because of the high consentration of phyto estregens. Supposidley not only does it mess with you when you are going thru menopause but it messes with your metabolism. If thats true I'll make it thru menopause, I  :)>>> tofu!

Yabbit- At least the nutritionalist didn't tell you to stop eating garbanzo beans (lol)! Glad you finally went to one. Good luck, you can do it and don't be too hard on yourself!

The half-hour wait is standard, I have to wait that long after I take my meds to eat. The citrus water is to clear your system and also help you "go potty." (The organic cidre vinegar in water is basically the same thing.)

He didn't say I couldn't have any bread but I think that's because he's Spanish, it is known all over Europe that a Spaniard without bread will just curl up and die. ;D But only 25 grammes, for breakfast, a day. I'm  not that bothered by bread anyway.

It sounds like you got the nice nutritionist that you were hoping for.  He seems very understanding...especially the comment about the scale.  I am glad it went for you.
