My mom and my brother's girlfriend have gone vegetarian as of yesterday!!!!!
I'm so happy for them and hopefully they can make this last. Does anyone else have friends that recently made a change?

nice! I'm sure you helped inspire them!  ;)b

You should share your favorite recipes with them!

One of my friends, who is a big foodie told me she wants to start eating vegetarian more often for health reasons.

Thats so great!
I lent my roommate the book "Skinny Bitch" wich recommends going vegan and explains all the nastiness of meat and dairy, and she totally went vegetarian, like overnight! Isn't it a great feeling!?!?

My friend hasn't bought meat since I recommended and she read that book. I don't know that she's done anything else, but eh, it's a start!

Seriously.  Two of my co-workers know that I'm on vegweb and my user name.  I don't want to share.  I want vegweb all to myself.

Yay!  Glad to hear it!  My mom has said she's going to stop buying meat this year!  Which means my dad won't be eating any dead animals this year either!  I don't know what they'll do when they eat out, but at least it's a step in the right direction!

Yay!!! That's so exciting!

I met my very first IRL vegans this weekend at my aunt's New Year's party! They made awesome black bean soup and tortillas and homemade guac and we got to eat it ALL, since everyone else was eating chili. Score!

I thought you meant two new veggies, like some cross-bred greens or something  ;D
But this is better for the world, if less exciting for me!

that's awesome!  was there anything in particular that inspired them (a video, book, your shining example, etc.) or did they just decide to "try" it for health/ethical reasons as a new year's resolution?

i just celebrated my sixteenth year of vegetarianism this new year's.  it's probably one of the few resolutions that ever actually stuck with me!  march will finally mark my first vegan-iversary.  :)

my younger brother decided to "go vegetarian for at least three months" as part as his resolutions but made sure to state that it was purely for health reasons.  (afterall, it's just not "manly" to be a veg*n.  ::))  for a new year's gift, i made him a binder filled with my favorite recipes and quickie/simple meal ideas, a list of "pantry staples", and a few pages with links to my favorite vegan cooking blogs, recipe websites (vegweb was first on the list, of course!), an encouraging letter, and other stuff.  i stuck the binder in with a box full of some of my most commonly used ingredients (nut. yeast, various legumes, agave nectar, soy milk, etc.) a few old copies of veg. times (that my mother subscribed me to before i went vegan), and one of my favorite cookbooks.  hopefully this will help inspire him and make his resolution last longer than he originally intended.  :cow: :smileteeth: :pig: :smileteeth: :chicken:

my mom changed her diet because she is overweight and getting older, and it is slowing her down. she isn't upset about her size, but she doesn't want to become like my grandma.. and heart disease also runs in the family.

and my brother's girlfriend never ate red meat, just a lot of chicken, but she just sees it as pointless now. like why eat 1 animal instead of none?

Sounds a lot like my reasoning when I realized I didn't like red meat, and only ate chicken because I somehow thought it was so different from cows and pigs. Same with fish, really. It just seems so far removed. And then people who eat meat think that cows and pigs are so far removed from cats and dogs...

It's a strange concept. I still don't get why I thought that way. I've found it to be a weird philosophy to change. Like, I'm aware of it on a conscious level, but deep down it's tough to change the thought pattern.

Came to post 'who's the proud father?' or 'scientists have finally created two entirely new and different vegetables?!'

Yeah.

I wish my boyfriend was vegan (or even vegetarian!). But that would NEVER happen. He's like a typical football player who eats meat and drinks glasses of milk every day....But he admits that he's been eating less meat since he's been with me! Woo hoo!!!!!!  :)

Congrats of your family going veg! That is so wonderful!!
