Back to where it all vegan...New in San Antonio

Hi folks,

After a harrowing, transatlantic move of 2 adults, 2 toddlers, and 2 dogs, I am back in the US and back on VegWeb.  I tried a weight loss doctor when I first moved here at the end of July, but he put me on a high protein / low carb diet which frankly made me feel horribly sick.

I am prediabetic, so I found a book from the founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). I am going to save my money, eat a healthy vegan diet, and try to lose this extra weight.

Looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting some new ones!

No, no typo, just playing on the title :)

Welcome back! I just started using these forums. Thought I would say hi. Glad to hear your not doing that high protein low carb thing. Carb counting is what matters but doesn't mean high protein! lol. A good dietitian is worth talking too NOT a physician who has like one class in nutrition (no seriously they don't' get much training for this hence why there are Dietitians lol!) Any way hiya and welcome back and grats on feeling better!

Jane,

I'm in San Antonio too. Whole Foods (in the Alamo Quarry) has been my lifesaver. The deli often has great prepared vegan foods for when I'm too tired to cook and Whole Foods bakes a mean Vegan Pizza on a whole wheat crust using Daiya cheese. I just tell them that I want vegan cheese and what toppings I want when I order. They also carry "Uncle Eddie's Vegan Cookies" and vegan chocolate. And, on another note, Starbucks makes a delish soy latte.

Being vegan doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight.  PCRM are good people.  If you ever want another resource, see if your library has Joel Furhman's Eat to Live.  I'm preferential to it as just a way to eat in general.  You don't count calories or anything like that, you just eat whole foods in certain proportions (lots of veggies 'n fruit, some beans, limited grains).
