What's your favourite off the wall "conspiracy" theory?

Not the real stuff, like Monsanto taking over agriculture, which we know is happening. No, this thread is strictly for laffs. I'm talking about really bonkers ideas, like the following a friend of mine shared with me. My friend is an aerospace engineer. A relative of his (BIL, I think?) tried to convince him of the following:
"This group in the UK (we're in the USA) claims that there is a secret society living on the dark side of the Moon. The leader there is John F. Kennedy. His assassination was "faked" so he could fly there and rule the Moon. The Apollo Moon series of launches were all staged to keep the public thinking moon travel was impossible. From the early fifties and into the seventies, almost every scientist, doctor, physicist, geologist, farmer, etc., that died - didn't really die. Their deaths were faked and the real body was shuttled off to the dark side of the moon, where they live today. This video went on for an hour, telling example after example of deaths, and secret bases, etc. Mind you, all with no proof, no corroboration, no nothing.

When it ended, I had to tell him that I didn't believe any of it. He said he expected that because I was "in" on the secret. He also reiterated that my life was now in risk. 25 years later...I'm still doing okay."

I put this here, on Food Fight, because...well, because. I've run into a lot of duh--rrammma on a couple of other web communities I've been participating in lately, and I just felt safer putting it here. Do not take it seriously. Share your favourite giggle-worthy tinfoil hat type "theories".

Freemasonry is in cahoots with the Illuminati and together they secretly control major aspects of society and government and are working to establish the New World Order.

I always laugh when people have crazy Masonic conspiracy theories.  Well, I was only in Job's Daughters, so maybe I wasn't in the know and they are trying to take over the world.

that's what they want you to think. there is actually a secret society of literate cats, who created icanhascheezburger to keep us unsuspecting while they gradually take over the world's governments. Oh, and their cuteness is a cover too.

LOL! This is a great response!

I'm always fascinated by conspiracy theories, cults, government cover-ups, etc. It's always fun to entertain the mind with "what if these are true?" but when you lose your sense of reality, that's when you lose. Which brings me to my favorite theory.

Many believe our reality (or what we perceive as reality) is not reality at all. Many believe everything around us is controlled or programmed. The people that surround us are put there. The things we do are because we are programmed to do so. These theories go so far to claim that our circumstances are already planned.

It may seem that we have freewill and are in control of our destiny but (according to some) we don't. Our jobs, our successes, our failures, our lifestyles, our habits...all prearranged for us. For the god-fearing folk, this sounds familiar to their teachings. But the thing about the conspiracy theory I just discussed is not god-controlled..it's all controlled by man, by business, by money...but certainly not controlled by the individual who thinks they are perceiving true reality.

Now if you'll excuse me.....I have a black helicopter to catch.......

1) Pretty much anything glenn beck says, especially if he's crying.
2) When missionary baptists et al (no offense intended unless it's deserved!) talk about 'the homosexual agenda', or about how the takeover of the world by the evil secular humanists caused AIDS and Hurricane Katrina.

I'd laugh until I wet myself, ifonly they didn't kinda scare me... 'cause I'm beginning to suspect they don't mean it as a joke. (yikes!)

Like that Harvard fraternity that supposedly controls everything that happens in the States. Yeah, right. Arthur Conan Doyle started a lot of the Masonic nonsense with his Sign of Four.

Are you referring to "The Skulls"?

That's the one. The fraternity boys I knew in college were more interested in controlling their bladders than anything else.

I thought it was called the Skull And Bones society?

So true! Agreed.

Haha! I've heard of this. I knew a guy who had to carry a brick with him at all times. What some people will do for others sometimes amazes me.

I thought it was called the Skull And Bones society?

After further research, I stand corrected. Yes, the group is called "The Skulls and Bones" and yes a lot of our nation's prominent figures have come out of the group. That being said, I also found out The Skull and Bones was a group at Yale and I couldn't find anything about Harvard's secret society, if there even is one.

Exactly!

Sidenote: You mentioned Monsanto in your earlier conspiracy. I took an insurance claim yesterday from a guy who worked for Monsanto. I was tempted to ask, "so, are one of the guys who threatens people who don't use your products?" Haha!

New conspiracy - my buddy has tried to convince me that recycling does no good. He has convinced himself the trash and the recycled items end-up in the same spot: the landfill.

There's a partial truth to this. Many people believe that recycling paper does more harm then good because it takes more energy to ship the paper products to the factory and for the factory to make the recycled paper or paper product than to just make more paper.

And then there's water bottles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se12y9hSOM0

And the same thing pretty much goes for recycled electronics. "Recycled" electronics which we know are toxic are shipped off to developing countries and dumped there. Locals will rummage through the piles of electronic pieces and try to sell scraps of metal thus exposing themselves and their environment to toxic chemicals.

I listened to it every night while Taj had it on, for the past 4 years, (now he listens with headphones,)  but back then , Taj would fall asleep and leave it on, but he would somehow wake up if I tried to turn it off.  It usually ended up freaking me out! 2/3 of the shows were about ghosts and aliens.  Do you have any favorite past episodes? The Hollow Earth was definitely a favorite of mine!
