VegNews Using MEAT Photos??

http://www.quarrygirl.com/2011/04/13/rant-veg-news-is-putting-the-meat-into-vegan-issues/

Have you heard about this yet? Vegan blogger Quarrygirl posted that VegNews has been using stock photographs of meat products, parading them as vegan dishes! This really saddens me, as I look to VegNews as my go-to publication for all things vegan. I feel this is lacking any journalistic integrity, and honestly, is just plain lazy. You only need to look as far as their sister site, vegweb.com, to see the thousands of beautiful vegan food photographs!

What do you guys think about this? If you subscribe to VegNews, will you continue to do so?

AWESOME THREAD.

I will continue to subscribe if they make a public apology and explain their editorial practices, promise a change, and stop deleting comments on their site and here that call them out for this.

Not fucking likely. and this site is now run by Vegnews, so this thread will either be deleted or hounded by people defending VN. I'd be willing to guess one of the reasons there are 60 views of this thread and only 2 replies is because members are scared to speak up.

STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN. FUCK THIS DECEITFUL COMPANY. SPEND YOUR MONEY ON COMPANIES WHOSE PRODUCTS DO NOT EXPLOIT ANIMALS OR DECEIVE READERS.

Vegnews is disgusting for this. They've got a lot of 'splainin' to do.

The way they are dealing with the situation is such a copout. I have been lurking their facebook and they delete pretty much every negative comment regarding this. They need to take some responsibility, offer an apology and a solution to this problem. But they aren't doing that. They're being a bunch of cowards. They know they're in the wrong and it needs to be rectified before their reputation is completely soured.

I'm not a fan of VegNews and have never subscribed to their book, but I'm glad QuarryGirl decided to mention something about this. Seriously, it's just sad how VN has chosen to deal with the situation. I know where my money will never be spent....

No excuse for this, particularly when there are hundreds - if not THOUSANDS - of people who would volunteer to take vegan photos for the magazine just for a credit under the picture.

My thoughts exactly. And if you've visited any of the vegan blogs anywhere on the net, you'd see that it's quite easy to take beautiful and enticing amateur photos of food. Even the response seems like a copout.

:o  This really surprises me. I don't subscribe and have never been to their site, but wow. I think their response was ok, however there was no apology and like everyone said, I'm sure there are plenty of people that would take veg photos and submit them for free...what a shame!

The fact VegNews uses stock photography doesn't bother me perse', as the rebuttal (for that is what it is, it IS NOT an apology) mentions, this is common practice. Finding images that fit the MANY parameters involved in publication (proper format, editing program, proper size, right amount of pixels, etc) is difficult;  paying someone an hourly wage to simply go through the many beautiful amateur pictures on sites such as this one to find a few that could work to then contact the photographer for permission rights is unfeasible in light of time lines involved and is just too darn expensive, comparatively. I understand, and respect it.
What bothers me is their handling of the situation. They need to apologize for the extreme censorship they are practicing. They need to mention when they do use stock photos, in that issue, so their readership doesn't feel lied to and deceived, as it seems pretty obvious they feel that way.
That letter was not an apology.

***ETA: I want VegNews to know this is not the view of a veg*n. I am, however, a person A LOT of non-veg*n's/newtoveg*n's in the community come to for information on foods and resources. VegWeb is one of my favorites to recommend. VegNews will no longer be one of them.

I agree, hanashi.  Those are my feelings, as well.  Their response was severely lacking, in my opinion, and was such a non-apology.  I also think it would have been appropriate if they, in addition to actually apologizing, said they would no longer use non-vegan images in the future.  They made no such promise.

The censorship also really bothers me.  Not cool.

what i don't get is that they make such a point to only advertise vegan stuff in the mag but yet they don't give a shit if the put dead animals in pictures... doesn't make sense

and i also agree that there are soooooooo many awesome vegan food bloggers that i could bet you money they would make the recipe and take a picture of it free of charge! honestly if i took great photos and vegnews asked me to help out i would jump at the opportunity! excuses, excuses, excuses... sad  :'(

shit you could have asked AC!

holy shite, I missed out on this excitement yesterday....

I agree for the most part with hanashi--using stock photos is totally common, and there are plenty of photographers (who charge good money) that do nothing but take photos of different shit for various sites/media to use. But ferfuckssake, WHY would a a site called VegNews use stock images of dead animals and pass them off as vegan?!?
I'm absolutely sickened by this apparent censorship they're practicing, and by the fact that VegNews isn't actually apologizing for being hypocritical, free speech-hindering dicks.

Dear VegNews,

I WILL TAKE PHOTOS FOR YOU TO USE FOR FREE IF YOU STOP SHOWING US PICTURES OF DEAD FLESH WITHOUT EVEN CARING ABOUT WHY THAT IS WRONG.

Just apologize already.
Deal?
