VegNews Using MEAT Photos??

http://www.quarrygirl.com/2011/04/13/rant-veg-news-is-putting-the-meat-into-vegan-issues/

Have you heard about this yet? Vegan blogger Quarrygirl posted that VegNews has been using stock photographs of meat products, parading them as vegan dishes! This really saddens me, as I look to VegNews as my go-to publication for all things vegan. I feel this is lacking any journalistic integrity, and honestly, is just plain lazy. You only need to look as far as their sister site, vegweb.com, to see the thousands of beautiful vegan food photographs!

What do you guys think about this? If you subscribe to VegNews, will you continue to do so?

I like it too, I think everyone learned something, and luckily I now feel heard! Hopefully they will keep this in mind in the future!

Fun Fact: She told me if I wasn't gay, she'd invite me to her church (ha!).

Why don't you just choose to stop being gay so you can party with the SDA crowd, then?

Because...

MEN > JESUS

Hey, you asked.  :-D

hmmmmm i don't think the apology seems sincere... they should have weighed the possible scenarios before issuing their first statement... don't they have any business majors to help them with that? honestly i took many classes geared towards these kind of blow ups... there is obviously some pretty idiotic people running vegnews

Hey, you asked.  :-D

Side Note: Me & Hubby went to a SDA church for about a year. We had an openly gay couple that attended church there. The church didn't seem to have any problems with it. Not all branches are the same I guess :)>>>

I like the commenter who complained that he had to open a PDF to read the apology.  ;D  And then all of the people who wanted to have the whole argument all over again.  Sigh.

Now, was that so hard?  Thanks Veg News.  ;)b

But, seriously, what's up with the pdf?  Do they think it's more professional..like sending a letter?

I just saw this thread now, so I'm still fired up about the issue (reading quarrygirl's post, then the first BS "apology" and the 4 pages of posts before the resolution) so sorry for my negative comments, BUT:

I quit subscribing to VegNews a long while ago, because the vibe was too hipster, veganer-than-thou. And they Aren't veganer-than-anyone. I think that is hilarious, and depressing. Companies will do anything to save a little bit of money.

Exactly.  Ironically, that is the same vibe I got when reading “apology” #1, especially the last “point”-

—Yes, from time to time, after exhausting all options, we have resorted to using stock
photography that may or may not be vegan. In an ideal world we would use custom-shot
photography for every spread, but it is simply not financially feasible for VegNews at this
time. In those rare times that we use an image that isn’t vegan, our entire (vegan) staff
weighs in on whether or not it’s appropriate. It is industry standard to use stock
photography in magazines—and, sadly, there are very few specifically vegan images offered
by stock companies. In addition, it’s exceedingly challenging to find non-stock imagery that
meets the standard necessary for publication. We would love nothing more than to use only
vegan photography shot by vegan photographers, and we hope to be there soon.

It’s irritating how they italicized “all”, like they really tried every avenue.  Please.  Getting lied to is sometimes worse than the offense.  The last sentence even comes off kinda rude and sarcastic too.  Even though the new apology is 100 times better, it is aggravating that it took so much to get it.  For the livelihood of the magazine, they basically HAD to put out apology #2!

Again, sorry to unveganly beat a dead horse.   :horse:

Well look on the bright side, at least when Veg News cuts corners to save $$ no animals get hurt.  :p  All business does it.

Okay, maybe I'm just a bitch that holds a grudge, but they didn't actually apologize for why I, personally, was so angry. They apologized for the photos, but I was hoping for an apology for the shitty "apology" they first issued. Like, maybe a "Hey guys. We were dicks about this whole thing and we thought that if we issued this half-assed apology that we might get you to shut up and we'd still go on using meaty photos. Cool?'

I still don't think I could look at a VN photo/magazine again without questioning the picture and their motives. If they're going to cut corners here, where else? And why after we first got pissed about it did they, hours later, use a non-vegan photo on the website? They didn't finally "get it" because it dawned on them, I think they finally "got it" because they knew they were losing readers. Not because they suddenly had the epiphany that what they did was wrong. I'm still calling bullshit. Sorry.

They did a segment on All Things Considered last night about this! They interviewed the publisher. I'm sure someone less lazy than me could link to it, but the basic feeling I got from him was like, "since you all bitched so much, we won't do it again, geez!" I thought it was kind of funny it made it to NPR
