Osama Bin Laden is dead, which means...

...what, exactly?

Call me a child of the 60s, which goodness knows I am...but I have the feeling "they" knew where he was all along. It just became expedient to chop him now, for whatever reason.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Osama yet another ex-CIA man, like wossisface--um, Noriega?

A lot of y'all are too young to remember the last few heads of state of Communist USSR. In those days "kidney ailment" translated as "killed by his own people in one way or another." People in positions of power who became surplus to requirements developed kidney ailments. One after another.

Yabbit, yes, Osama was CIA trained, as were his first group of followers.

A friend of mine on facebook put to words the actions of many in the US pretty well:

"While I'm personally apalled by some reactions to Osama Bin Ladin's death, the fact remains that the celebrations taking place are a natural reaction and are providing a positive catharsis to our current national mythological drama and, functionally, serve to reboost the overall morale of the US' Selbstgefühl in the same way the defeat of antagonists in classical drama reflects our understanding of morality."

Someone else then quipped we need to find/create a new mythology.

My thoughts when I first heard this was, "Okay, who/what did we bomb/attack when Obama made this statement."

When combined with eric's facts, and that Hitler's death was announced on a May 1st, as well as another 'villain' from history that is escaping my mind. We, as a country, are notorious for making such big and pompous announcements to distract the media from other, less than ideal actions the government may be doing, that they wouldn't otherwise be able to get away with.

It's great to read these responses from like-minded folks, I was reading my friends' blogs and facebook entries and starting to feel like a terrorhead for not being moved at all about his death.

I felt the same way when this first happened. It really relieved me to find out that I was not the only one.

I don't care about his death, either way, but I definitely think a trillion dollars is too much to spend for a symbolic act.

It's entirely too much.
Here's a look at the COST of the war to the U.S., vs. what We could be doing with that money.

I'm also pretty convinced that timing was planned. Like Yabbit said, it's quite possible that We knew of his whereabouts already and just waited until the right moment....

Taxpayers in The United States have paid $1.3 trillion for Total War Spending (Iraq + Afghanistan) Since FY01. For the same amount of money, the following could be provided:

    * 259.2 million People Receiving Low-Income Healthcare for One Year

Taxpayers in the city of Atlanta, Georgia will pay $207.3 million for Proposed total Iraq & Afghanistan war spending for FY2011. For the same amount of money, the following could be provided:

    * 111,521 Children Receiving Low-Income Healthcare for One Year, OR...
    * 55,225 People Receiving Low-Income Healthcare for One Year, OR...
    * 28,192 Military Veterans Receiving VA Medical Care for One Year, OR...
    * 3,252 Elementary School Teachers for One Year, OR.... plenty of other, much more worthwhile expenses.

at least we have the right to speak the truth through comedic puppetering.... I guess. I agree with 'e' eric, and It had to have been a timing thing to get obamas rating up and cover that thing up we did over there O_o

''Hey look a distraction!'' - the US government

base you fricken crack me up.

He's been doing that during his whole presidency. Every time he does something questionable or outrageous he'll sign some tiny little bill that looks like it's good for equality or something. Then everyone gets the Obama stars in their eyes again and they become blind again.

Also, it seems like they purposefully waited until the day after the royal wedding to not overshadow the even of a friend of the U.S. - which is actually kind of nice, since it was all going to happen anyway.

I find it absolutely repulsive that so many people are celebrating the death of another. I don't care what he did or influenced in his lifetime- cheering about the death of another human doesn't make you any better.

call me crazy but part of me doesn't believe that he is actually dead.  I tend to think conspiracy first when it comes to these things, kind of like yabbit.  Obama will most likely be running for re-election next year, how coincidental that they catch osama while he is president.  Also i heard in the news that the military shot him in the head, a shot that got him right above the eye and a shot that blew off almost half of his head, hmmmmm, that sounds a bit odd.  Almost half his head?  Meaning there won't be any sure way to identify whether it really is him.

But, I guess we'll never really know.  It just all seemed out of the blue.

Rats! Now they'll have to find a new nickname for the 500 Euro note. It's been known all along as "a Bin Laden" because no one's ever actually seen one...but everyone knows somebody who claims they have.

When I watched the evening news last night and they showed throngs of Americans all over celebrating in the streets, the first thing that came to mind was the throngs of terrorist supporters in the Middle East celebrating some catastrophe in the US.  Eerily similar.

An eye for an eye does not create justice.  It merely perpetuates the cycle of violence.

We do like to kill each other and we are pretty good at it.

The overall scenario smells more fishy than Bin Laden's stinky corpse 20,000 leagues under the sea.

Both parties unwilling to settle budget.. we won the war!
Bin Laden is dead... he was 'hiding' in a new fortress about 1/2 mile of what Pakistan considers their West Point.
With one foul swoop we took out Bin Laden.. watch the other hand people (simple card tricks)

How is it coincidental? There's nothing coincidental about it, we were still over there fighting and looking for him.

And how does shooting someone translate to "there won't be any sure way to identify whether it really is him." You identify whether or not it's him before you shoot him. They also have DNA evidence which is a lot more reliable than site.

Al Queda (SP?) swore revenge within moments.  If it was not Osama, why bother?  If it was someone else, Osama would have been rubbing our noses in it pretty quickly.

What I think we should do next is pay the families of those who died blood money as is Muslim custom.  Tradition is that ends the revenge cycle.  I doubt it would work but it is worth a try.  Yeah, we supported Osama when he was fighting communist Russia.  It was a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", but those "friends" often become the snakes we are playing with and they do bite.

I guess I fall in the "he deserved to die" camp but he was still a human being and as such we should not rejoice over his death.  Of interesting note to me:  When other cheered the WTC falling, I saw nothing on the news about Muslims saying it was wrong to cheer.  We have our internal protesters here who are very vocal.

I have a niece who saw the second plane crash.  After the crash outside Summerset, PA, I was telling people in OR that something did not go as the terrorists planned.  There was nothing for a target in that area.  I had driven through there many times.  I was at ground zero about 6 yrs ago.  All the frenetic energy on NYC stops about a block away and the area has a hushed somber feel.

To those who say Osama's death was wrong, I want to know what you think about the concept of justice.

This may be slightly off topic but I wanted to point out that all this stuff about Osama Bin Laden being muslim is misleading.  Bin Laden was a terrorist, not a muslim (though he claimed he was muslim).  I have had a few devout muslim friends who would never have cheered on the destruction of the WTC and who were sickened by the actions of these terrorists.  Nevertheless they had their houses egged and suffered hatred by others because they looked middle eastern and dressed this way.
Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist camp have broken many many muslim laws, customs, and beliefs.  I just hate to see that so many in the world believe that this is what muslims are all like.

The news chooses what it wants to cover.  My friends who are Muslim were disgusted by the terrorist act and in turn were also terrified for their families because locals (presumably people in the Christian realm) were violently targeting other community members who looked Middle Eastern... or Persian... or Latinos that looked Middle Eastern from a certain angle...
