Hey Everyone!

Does anyone know if there is anything vegan at iHop? We just had one built in Ann Arbor and I wanted to try it--but I can't find any nutritional or ingreident info on their products (probably not a good sign...)

I could really go for some good pancakes!

I know guys! I agree too that the ones you make are the best--I just miss going out to eat, being around other people and my friends--I feel really isolated  :'( I mean--I do go out with some of my vegan friends from my animal rights group--but all we talk about is animal rights, and eco living, and vegan stuff--I just miss hanging out at a crowded, crappy restaurant with your old friends having stupid debates over celebritie drama and boys and gossip...I know it's not very "brainy" but I miss it...I was hopin to go to iHop and just be me...not vegan me!

I totally understand this. I miss it, too.

Lately, I've gone to Red Robin a few times with others, because it's the only place I can get a decent veggie (boca) burger around. But as I sit there, I get so annoyed with obnoxious loud people eating their disgusting burgers...I'm just not going to go there anymore (I find I make a better veggie burger anyway!). It's the only "typical" American restaurant that I have gone to in the past year, and I can't even hack that.

I try to stick with vegan restaurants mostly. Or ethnic ones that that give you a choice of substitutes, like tofu in lieu of meat. Mostly I eat at home though. If and when I eat out, it's mostly out of sheer laziness...I just don't feel like cooking sometimes!

I must say, not to sound self righteous (hopefully I don't), but since I became vegan, I absolutely refuse to eat anything at a fast food restaurant (and trust me, I used to stop by and eat McDonald's cookies and fries when I was a vegetarian--I felt guilty doing it!). I no longer find any good reason to stop by there. Even if they offer something vegan like onion rings...I simply can't support them, with any good conscience.

Me too!  I don't know any vegans or vegetarians for that matter and would seriously like to.  Don't get me wrong...my friends are great but I don't like having to decide every time where we eat.  I'm pretty sure they are sick of eating at the same places all the time but are too nice to say anything.  Same thing goes with family.

Vegan friends who love to gossip while eating delicious healthy food would be a dream come true.

Here here!
I agree and like SB said above.... why would one even bother going into one and supporting their operation with your hard earned $$$? I've lived in NYC, and I've lived in some pretty rural places as well...somehow I've survived my "veganism" without having to contribute to the "bottom line" in establishments such as these.

I remember a thread a long time ago on here where I believe the BK Veggie burger was discussed (at Burger Death..er...King)... How that if many of us "veg heads"  went there and ordered one, that other places would follow suit and offer veggie burgers and similar items as well. The truth is that they've been offering it for years now (with cheese and egg based mayo), and I don't believe one single animal has had their life saved as a result. The fucked up way I see it is that if you are a veggie...you're going to order veggie food no matter where you go...but in truth...how many omni's actually go there and say...ah...f**k the triple "heart attack" whopper....give me a bk veggie instead? probably none.... So, in the end....just as many people that wanted to order meat in the first place STILL order meat...just as many animals will suffer and die....and those that buy a BK veggie (or anything in those places) just add to the overall profit and bottom line of the establishment.... (as well as the stock holders and executives that get rich off of causing incalcuable pain and suffering)....

I also think that items such as these (BK veggie, etc.)....just help places like Burger Death bring down their "median score or average" when looking at healthy vs. unhealthy food they offer. It's easy for them to bring down the over all calorie and fat content on all items sold...or a way to say to the government (who now is wanting to restrict items...or at least make places post nutritional info)...look...we offer "healthy" food.... When in truth..they do not... when's the last time you saw an actual advertisement for the BKVeggie on national TV or print? ::)

Well...sorry for the long rant....just my "3 cents" this morning....
-d!

Don't feel bad!!! I totally understand where you are at! Only I end up at bars or other's people's houses all the time instead of Ihop or other chains. Being social is important to me too. You can go wherever you want. Eat something beforehand, then when you go say sorry you were hungry earlier & couldnt wait to eat then just get fries or onion rings. Noone will care- really! If you don't make a big deal out of it, they won't.

Another issue I have is that I have a really big appetite, so I've gotten into the habit of always keeping a clif bar or other snack on hand too.

Capture, you took a huge step when you became vegan! I think that is GREAT and very admirable, and I, for one, am so proud of you!  :) :) :)

Yeah, there are still chains/fast-food-type places you can go to, just not ihop so much...

i have to deal with this a lot when i work at starbucks; we don't have a fridge for employees (it's a teeny store), so I either have to bring something that doesn't need to be refrigerated for lunch (pancakes?), go to one of the chains next store (baja fresh, quiznos, robeks, etc), or forgo lunch entirely.

i mean, i would never be like "hey, let's all go to baja fresh for dinner!" but when it's necessary i'll eat at one of the *wonderful* american chains. hey, at least they have something vegan.

but to be honest... about half the time i walk to the japanese grocery a block away to get vegan sushi. it takes my whole lunch break to go there, come back, and wolf it down, but it beats eating a burrito every day  :-X

I keep granola bars and other snacks with me.  You could snack on your vegan treats before you reach the restaraunt and then just have a drink when you hang out with your friends at a restaraunt that doesn't cater to your lifestyle.

capture there's no need to feel pathetic at all. I understand exactly how you feel, its hard when suddenly your identity becomes "the vegan". But, at the same time, I embrace it, I use it to show people that yes, I am "the vegan" (or "a vegan" or "an uber vegetarian" whatever people decide to call me ;)) and I eat incredible food, lead a relatively normal life (compared to who?) and do regular things. there's no reason why you and your friends can't still hang out.

Our theatre has a tradition of going to Friendly's one night per show and most the cast and crew go. When I go, I get water and split a small french fry with some friends (i called ahead before the first time i went as a vegan and they use vegetable oil to fry). its about as "normal" as i can eat out.

But don't be discouraged, instead, make it seem like that sald your'e eating is the best damned food in the world  ;D or, don't even focus on the food. go bowling or to a park and play frisbee. there are tons of activities you can do without needing to focus on food AT ALL. and if you feared that you guys might need food after, bake some muffins or something and bring it, tell everyone they're free, my friends love free ;)

oh, capture, you silly silly grrl...you are not more normal... you are just as freeeky as the rest of us.  ;)

maybe waffles? or do they serve commercial brands of cereal that might be vegan?
but dont fret if there is "wheat" toast... its surprisingly good dry, with too sweet grape jelly at two am.  :P

i love dry toast. only way to eat it in my opinion, other than slathered with PB and eaten with a banana.

agree, IMHO the best pancakes i have ever had are the beer pancakes i make! nom nom nom.

hold up...beer pancakes??  i have a special place in my belly for beers and beer foods... just searched and found the q&a thread with their mention, and i will surely give these a shot!  yum, beer and pancakes...mmmmm....(all homer simpson style)

re:  Burger King's veggie burger - my bf stopped there on a layover during a business trip and ordered a veggie burger; the person that worked there asked if he wanted bacon on it!?!  silly and not necessarily anything to do w/ihop, but the BK talk made me remember that story...

I agree! Don't let the changes you have to make ruin the experience of sharing time with friends. Actually, I put off becoming vegan for probably 2-3 months because there was this organic diner near my college that I loved going to with friends on weekend mornings... I was afraid I would miss their omelettes too much & not enjoy my breakfasts anymore! ::) It sounds so silly now, because now that I "can't" (or choose not to, rather) eat eggs/cheese/etc., I don't miss it... And I haven't stopped enjoying eating out with friends! (Well, maybe it does bother me a little to see people chow down on sausage, but whatever. ;) It's still an enjoyable overall experience.) Even if you have to eat before you go & drink coffee/tea/water & eat some french fries instead of a full meal, that's okay. The best part about going to restaurants, in my opinion, is the company & conversations!

And I didn't know you went vegan, Capture! Good for you! :D And really--don't feel bad about wanting go out with your friends!! That's a completely normal feeling! You just have to figure out ways to tweak it, so it can be enjoyable & fulfilling for all of you! Are there any restaurants in your area that specialize in vegan food? For instance, in Minneapolis we have Pizza Luce, which is AMAZING & uses lots of fresh, local ingredients, but offers both meat & cheese options, as well as delicious vegan food. Maybe you could suggest something like that sometime instead of IHOP?
