white sugar and beef bones

My daughter, whose family is also vegan, pointed out that white sugar is made with beef bones. So I did a little research and found an article in Mother Earth News Sept/Oct 1971 saying that white sugar is bad for you, and among the things it listed was how burned beef bones were used to make it whiter. Yuck! I am so glad I am not big on sugar!

Most commercial sugar is filtered through something called " bone char " , which is just what it sounds like , baked cattle bones ground into a powder , through which the liquid sugar is strained . Look for a vegan certification on your sugar , as there is on Florida Crystals organic sugar .
