Does anyone have any tips on how to successfully cut a mango away from the seed without making it into a mushy pulp by the end of the process?? ::)

The "official", if there is such a thing, way to cut a mango, to cut in longways on each side, cut it into dices and invert..........well here's a step by step guide of what I'm talking about.....http://homecooking.about.com/od/howtocookbasics/ss/cutmango.htm
I like my mangos a little firm and tart, so it's easy for me to just peel it whole and just cut slices away from the pit.
I love mangos and eat them often.

Thank you Baypuppy and Tweety! That site really helped, Tweety. :D
Since becoming vegan a few months ago I've been discovering different foods and I've found I really love mangos, too! The guys I work with will be disappointed I won't be entertaining them anymore by making such a mess trying to eat them now! ::)

We had a mango tree as a kid. That's half the fun, to make a mess, get juicy fingers and have the juice running down your chin. :)

Thanks so much for the link. I have been struggling with mangos and usually just make a mess out of them. I really appreciate this. I've been wanting to make the VWAV Mango Spring Rolls.

I love mangoes too....but recently found something out. They are actually in the poison ivy family and I found out the hard way. I was eating one out of the skin and ended up with this horrible reaction on my face and in my mouth. It lasted for like two weeks! Apparently the mango skin is where the itchy factor is stored and if you are allergic to ivy you might have a reaction. Eating it after being cut from the skin seems to be OK for me, but I'm too scared to try after what happened last time.

Wow, that's interesting. I'm allergic to poison ivy but, luckily, haven't had any problems. I wanted to know more so I googled it. Here is a paste from Wikipedi's site:
"The mango is in the same family as poison ivy and contains urushiol, though much less than poison ivy. Some people get dermatitis from touching mango peel or sap. Persons showing an allergic reaction after handling a mango can usually enjoy the fruit if someone else first removes the skin. The leaves are toxic to cattle."

I had to comment on this post because even after ALL of the wonderful suggestions made by other members, sadly I am not of talent. I STILL mush them up. Most of the juice ends up running down my arm before I am halfway through, and I'm trying to lick the mush from in between my fingers so I don't lose any of that mango goodness. I even tried buying them very firm, and barely ripe, they do cut easier, but I end up with the hard crunchy middle mixed in, and not knowing it until I've chewed for 10 mins on the same piece. So my solution... I peel them, and knowing I will make a mess, hold a paper plate under my chin and eat them like an apple!

Pardon my ignorance, but is Oxo a brand name then? Just wondering where I can look for this nifty-sounding contraption.

Oxo is a brand name--I googled "oxo mango core" and there are several places that come up to buy it online (don't know about buying it in local stores--you'd have to look around). Here is Amazon's:

Thank you Elizabeth for both the info on Oxo and the Engine 22 guys. I had not heard of them until just a couple of days ago when another person from this site brought them to my attention. I was extremely excited to find that I am not the only one, as the guys here are giving me a bit of a hard time. They believe I will wither away to nothing. ::) They try to do it in a teasing way mostly, but I know they are worried. I know better, though- but it will take time to prove it to them. Meanwhile I have the Engine 22 guys to back me up now! Thanks!!

Hi. Oxo is the manufacturer of this gadget. Cook's Illustrated gave it a thumbs up.
