Barbeque Sauce

Is Sweet Baby Ray's Barbeque Sauce (Original recipe) vegan?

it contains 'natural flavor', which is ofen animal derived. also might want to look into the source of the sugar. it may be processed through bone char filters.

omg, i never knew that 'natural flavors' could be animal derived! i can't believe it!

oh well, time to clean out the fridge  ;)

another thing about BBQ sauce, which i think is really annoying, is that they almost always put high fructose corn syrup in it. i always try to avoid corn stuff like that, which is difficult because corn is practically in EVERYTHING!

i think a better option is to make your own BBQ sauce. use molasses and tomato paste, and maybe some onions and garlic, if you like. i love liquid smoke, to add a smoky flavor. be careful with it though, liquid smoke is really potent!

It should be a any good grocery store.  I've bought it here in Uvalde and in Lubbock, different chain stores, HEB and United.  Albertson's and Safeway probably have it too.

Get "Annie's Organic" BBQ sauce. She makes 2 kinds and they are both awesome!  :)

I'd love to make my own bbq sauce so if anyone has a tried and true recipe (especially if it uses hickory smoke) then let me at it.

I actually bought a bbq last year for the express purpose of making veggie portabello shiskabobs, veg burgers, corn, bbq tofu (mmmm~~!!!!)  People who know I'm a vegetarian always question me about it and I tell them there's more than just dead flesh that tastes good cooked on an outdoor grill. :)

I'd love a good homemade BBQ sauce recipe!!
Anyone??

BBQ sauce is the only thing in our entire house with HFCS in it.
I wish I could make a tasty one myself and we can be HFCS-free!!

so if it says natural flavor, its made from animal products? omg!!! i had no idea.

NO, no natural flavor sometimes (maybe often) has animals products in it....  you can call the company and ask...
Sometimes it's not animal products... but becuz they don't have to tell you what the flavors are it is a way to hide it. better safe than sorry i guess.... but not all natural flavors are animals dervied.

Like "spice", the words "natural flavours" or "natural aromas" can be label-speak for "we don't want you to be able to duplicate the recipe, so we're not telling you." So it could be anything, an herb, a spice, lemon juice, you name it--not necessarily animal-derived, although sometimes it is.
As a translator I was once asked to translate trade-secret recipes (formulas) for commercial products that were going to be manufactured over here. You get paid extra to sign a sort of "vow of silence"--and woe betide ye if you keep a copy for your files!

any one have a homemade recipe?

I didn't realize the "natural flavors" were animal byproducts.  I probably should've guessed as much.  Ah, well . . . this'll give me a good excuse to try making my own sauce and possibly trying the one in 150 Vegan Favorites--there's mangoes in it, if I'm not mistaken, which is reason enough to go to the store.

Thanks for the info on the true meanings of the ingrediants and the suggestions to make homemade sauce.

Love,
Syd

This is the recipe I use--nothing special, unique, or surprising--but it tastes good.

BBQ Sauce
1/2 cup (125 ml) molasses
1/2 cup (125 ml) ketchup
1/4 cup (60 ml) mustard
2 tbsp (30 ml) vinegar
pinch of chili powder
1 clove garlic, minced
tomato sauce or paste to taste (optional)
liquid smoke to taste (optional)

Thoroughly mix molasses with other ingredients.

If you use HFCS-free ketchup your good to go!

Sorry but what is HFCS?

Sorry but what is HFCS?

High fructose corn syrup.  Not un-vegan or anything, just not very good for you. :)
