Tempeh Philly No-Steak Sandwich

What you need:

1 package Tempeh (prep info below)
1/ 2 cup Balsamic vinegar, for marinating
1/2 cup Teriyaki sauce, for marinating
1 medium green bell pepper, sliced into long strips
1 medium yellow or white onion, sliced into long strips
1/2 carton of Cremini mushrooms, sliced
6 hoagie-style buns
6 slices of vegan mozzarella or provolone
salt & fresh cracked pepper
olive oil, for sauteing
(optional) Rogan Josh spice mix (or other spicy blend, for added flavor)
(optional) vegan mayonnaise

What you do:

Prep the tempeh. Slice it into strips as thinly as you can. Then mix the balsamic vinegar & teriyaki in a medium bowl, and marinate the tempeh in the mixture for about 30-45 minutes, or until you can see that the tempeh has soaked up a lot of the marinade.
As the tempeh is marinating, slice the onion and green bell pepper into long strips and slice the mushrooms, like you would for a Philly cheese steak.
When the tempeh is ready, heat a saute pan to medium-high, and add the olive oil. Then saute the onions, peppers, and mushrooms until they begin to caramelize. Now add the tempeh. It will probably crumble, but that's ok. Then add the Rogan Josh spice, salt, and pepper to taste.
Slice the hoagies lengthwise if not already sliced, and toast the inside portions under the broiler until light golden brown. Then spread the vegan mayo to taste on the bottom part of the bread, pile on the sauteed veggies, and top with the vegan cheese. Then put those bottom portions back under the broiler to let the cheese melt.
Assemble the sandwiches and you're ready! These are great with some chunky steak fries!! I served this to non-vegetarians, and they were very pleasantly surprised! Yum-Yum!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Made this and it was delicious.....  I marinated my tempeh for too long, the balsamic vinegar was over powering.  don't make that mistake.

In the future, I might like to try this with a different marinade using Worcestershire and Teriyaki with much less balsamic.

I also think Daiya fake cheese would be wonderful on this.

This is my favorite recipe of all time ever! I make it every week. I've also made it for a lot of my friends who are not vegetarians and they've all just loved it!

I made a wrap with this and it was awesome. I didnt like tempeh the first time I tried it so this was a surprise.

Another tempeh keeper!  :)  Going to try it next time with the changes LITGUERILLA made. I couldnt find any 100% vegan cheese.  :(  Gonna check the HFS though, wish me luck.

litguerilla: thank you!  I'm glad you liked these....used to be one of my favorite indulgences when I used to eat meat, and this satisfies my craving too!  I love it with Vegenaise, that stuff tastes very real.  The cheese sauce & worch. sauce sound like great additions.  Awesome!

Great recipe! A nice, familiar recipe that is much better for you than the original! I substituted a homemade "cheese" sauce (nutritional yeast, soy milk, seasonings) for the vegan cheese slices. I also added some vegan Worchestershire sauce to the marinade for a richer flavor. My boyfriend ate two of these sandwiches. This is one I'll be making again and again!
