Tasty Whole Wheat Garlic Sticks

What you need:

1 cup luke warm water
2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
oregano, to taste
basil, to taste
garlic powder, to taste
1/2 cup vegan margarine, melted
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
vegan cheese, to taste

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Mix the yeast with the lukewarm water until the yeast is dissolved. Add the salt and vegetable oil.
2. Stir, then add the flour, and mix together. Knead dough with hands and add oregano, basil, and garlic powder. Knead these into the dough.
3. Put dough on a pizza stone, or a cookie sheet and roll it out like a pizza. After it is flat, cut it into bread stick shapes. Put it in the oven for 5 minutes. While it is baking in the oven for 5 minutes mince garlic into melted margarine, and stir.
4. After the bread has been baking for 5 minutes, take it out and spread the margarine and garlic mixture on top of the sticks with a brush. Spread desired amount of vegan cheese on top.
5. Put bread back in the oven for 10 more minutes. Then broil for 2 minutes. Take out of oven and enjoy!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

yeast. other changes: i mixed in my herbs (fresh rosemary, fresh basil, miced garlic, and garlic powder) with the flour before adding it to the yeast mixture; saved a little herbs for the butter to be brushed on top, with which I actually used half butter, half olive oil. i forgot the soy cheese, but they were still delicious.

I used olive oil instead of margarine and vegetable oil.  I grated the garlic instead of mincing, and put more garlic.  I put corn meal between the dough and pan.  Before putting it in stove I put holes into the dough with a fork so the oil/garlic mix goes into it better.  After the initial five minutes in the oven I pressed jualopenos and olive slices into dough with a fork so it will not come loose.  I also sprinkled some salt at this stage.  I cut the bread into pieces after it was finished.

Alright. The Verdict...

AWESOME.

Love love loved them. We made some garlic butter and went to town with these babies.

This recipe really needs revising. First of all. Don't add the salt straight to the yeast/water mix. This could kill the yeast and your dough will not rise. After you mix the yeast and the water together, add in half the flour. Mix, then add salt and the rest of the flour and ingredients.

If you want a better rise then first put the dough in a well oiled bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let sit until doubled. Then proceed with the rest of the steps.

Not sure what went wrong. This didn't make that many at all, and it didn't rise that much, they were really hard.

I used 1 packet of yeast, did everything else pretty much the same... idk. They tasted good, but wasn't what I expected at all...

Oh wow, make that 1 packet of yeast not 2 TBS lol or 1 TBS at the most. :)

Are you really supposed to use 2 tablespoons of yeast?  I assume that was supposed to be teaspoons.  Two tablespoons would be almost three packets.  I have never seen a bread recipe use such a big yeast/flour ratio.  These look great, and I would like to make them tomorrow to go with the stew I'm making for my anti-vegan family.

These are awesome!!  I added Italian seasoning instead of the separate herbs and I skipped the soy mozzarella and used parma instead.  Next time I will roll them up on the ends like allychristine mentioned so they don't burn.  Also, if using parma, I don't recommend broiling as much as 2 minutes if at all. Some of the "cheese" and garlic burned a little. Also don't spill butter on the cookie sheet. Nevertheless a solid 5.  =-)

Very yummy.  I haven't found vegan cheese that i like, so I left it out.  I think the only other change I will make next time is with the cooking time.  I think it was a little to long for my oven.

these rock! i halved the recipe and ended using a little more water in order to fully disolve the yeast. other changes: i mixed in my herbs (fresh rosemary, fresh basil, miced garlic, and garlic powder) with the flour before adding it to the yeast mixture; saved a little herbs for the butter to be brushed on top, with which I actually used half butter, half olive oil. i forgot the soy cheese, but they were still delicious.

thanks a lot!  :)
