Not another bean burger

What you need:

1 cup dry quinoa 2 cups water 2 jalapenos, roughly chopped 2 carrots, roughly chopped 3 stalks celery, roughly chopped 3 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained 2 cups oats 2 tablespoons paprika 2 tablespoons garlic powder or minced garlic pinch salt (I used raw pink salt) 2 tablespoons flax oil, as needed (I used organic cold pressed olive oil)

What you do:

1. To begin, add quinoa to pot with water, and bring to boil. Cover and simmer until done, about 15 minutes. Put jalapenos, carrots, celery into food processor. Grind into small bits. 2. When quinoa is cooked, put beans, veggie bits, and oats into same bowl and squish with a big spoon. Add spices and garlic. 3. Add flax, and mash all ingredients (except oil) together. Form into patties. Cook in oil until golden on each side. Yum! See more of my recipes here: http://bicyclingvegan.blogspot.com Source of recipe: I wanted a new burger recipe, so I made a huge batch and we keep them in the freezer. To reheat, just throw onto your cast iron skillet!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I made this tonight and just finished dinner, I will say I was rather worried, but am delightfully surprised!!! This was DELICIOUS!! I left out the jalapenos and cut the recipe in half due to the fact that there is only two of us eating it (we still have burgers to freeze cutting the recipe in half). I added vegan cheese to the top and then the veggie fixins yummy. Thanks for this delicious meal will definitely make again!!!!

I made a batch of these to freeze, but saved one for lunch. I, too, added onion to the mix. Instead of squishing everything up with a spoon, I got my hands in there and really mashed everything together.  As a result, the mixture held together really well.  I also baked it in the toaster oven, which may also have helped it stay together.  Topped with some sauteed onions and vegan cheddar, this was delicious!  I will definitely be making this again.

So, if you are like me and counting calories, I did the math for you (you're welcome). If this batch makes about 10 patties/servings, each is approximately 259 calories. Delicious!

dgmartino - you should be able to eat oats, so long as they are certified GF. The oats themselves don't contain gluten... they are just usually processed on the same equipment that processes wheat and that cross-contaminates them. If you buy them certified GF (Bob's Red Mill sells them, those are what I usually buy) then you should have no trouble making this recipe GF as is ;)

So what can you add instead of oats?  I am a new vegan and newly diagnosed gluten intolerant.  I am a college student who is not adventurous in the kitchen at all, just afraid to mess the meal up really.

I made this for dinner last night, and my non-vegan husband really liked it.  Two patties on bread and mashed sweet potato on the side was very filling.  I replaced the celery in the recipe with zuchinni and added onion.  Cooked on the electric skillet with only minimal crumbling.  These are spicier than I expected them to be but very good.

It's an interesting recipe and it came out a bit too crumbly and chewey for my liking. As I was piecing them together it kept falling apart, which also made it really messy to eat. But it did taste good. I'd probably add a bit more spices and some garlic / sprouts to the mix. I still prefer the black bean burgers recipe, especially with some adobo peppers or tex-mex seasoning added in.

It just says "oats." Wondering if it should be quick or regular oats...
