Lentil Sloppy Joes

What you need: 

1 cup lentils
2 cups water
2 tablespoons minced onion
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons green pepper flakes
(If you can not find green pepper flakes, add fresh green pepper sauteed until soft)
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon dry minced garlic (the kind in the spice section)
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 1/4 cups water

What you do: 

1. Rinse and pick through lentils. Add two cups water to pan with lentils and bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer about 55 minutes until tender, but not mushy.
2. For the sauce, combine the minced onion, salt, sugar, dry mustard, chili powder, green pepper flakes, cornstarch, minced garlic, and celery seeds. Combine well and set aside.
3. When lentils are done, add the tomato paste and water. Stir in the sauce seasoning. Combine well and heat through.
Serve on whole wheat buns or over brown rice.

this was so good! i havent had sloppy joes since i was a kid and they taste even better than the meat kind. and there was very little mess in the kitchen after i was done making them.


We (my partner and I) love this recipe. We decided that it mimics sloppy joes so well, but is meatless it needed a different name. We have started calling this recipe: Tidy Ernies. :) Thanks so much!!


YUM!!  I didn't have the mustard or celery so I left them out.  I also didn't use the cornstarch and instead of tomato paste and water I used tomato sauce.  I love sloppy joes but I have made them with TVP in the past and am now trying to avoid non-whole soy so this recipe made me sooooo happy.



WOW! This was amazing! My partner and I were looking for a new, creative way to enjoy our lentils and this was such a success!!
Super tasty and had an amazingly low mess factor.

We did not add extra water, found that water we cooked lentils in was enough. I also accidentally minced and added an entire onion....  :o So I sauted the onion, garlic and celery and it turned out great!

This was a great recipe (and my first time using lentils!) Everyone in my family loved them, including my very anti-veggie father! Mum said they tasted exactly like a "real" sloppy joe (I wouldn't know...I never even had a sloppy joe before...) This is a keeper!

This recipe was great, i didn't have lentils for a while, and just now decided to become vegetarian. and this recipe makes it so easy to make the switch! for some reason my lentils cooked in less than the time specified and i only used half a cup cuz it was only for me....great great great  :)


I can't wait to try this tomorrow for dinner! I was totally stumped on something my kids would eat that sort of sounded like "junk food" LOL  I too have many lentis in the cupboard to use up and this will be a great and tasty way to do that.

These were so easy and fast to make.  My kids love them too.  Even my 2.5 year old who only wants to eat ma n chreese, soy yogurt, soy nuggets and PB & J.  You have 8 thumbs up. 

I didn't have celery seed or cornstarch so I didn't add it.  I added a little ketchup but it made it way too spicy.  I added more chili powder, mustard and a little cumin.  Oh and I added 5 cloves of crushed garlic.  These were delicious!!! 


I just tried this and even though I am not a very good cook, they turned out excellent!  I will also be making this regularly.  You definately don't need all that water at the end.  I used sauteed onion and garlic instead of dried, which worked well.  Thanks for the recipe!
