Hardcore Muesli

What you need:

4 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup oat bran, other
1/2 cup other rolled grain
1 cup dried apples, torn into small pieces
1/2 cup almonds
1/4 sunflower seeds
1/4 cup sweetened or unsweetened cherries
unsweetened plain yogurt of choice, to taste
water

What you do:

1. To make the muesli simply combine the dry ingredients.
2. To prepare it for consumption place desired amount in bowl, but take note that it will expand as it soaks. Add yogurt to taste.
3. Add enough water to make a thin liquid. Let it sit at least an hour, it will thicken and expand. Enjoy.
The reason I eat muesli for breakfast (beyond the taste) is that my body is very sensitive to what I eat for my first meal of the day. Unlike granola this is very easy to digest (no stabbing stomach pain!). The dried ingredients have been rehydrated and the yogurt contains live cultures. This muesli doesn't make me feel bloated or too full. The lack of added refined sugar (excepting if sweetened cherries are used) or refined grains means there is no sugar rush, but at the same time isn't so heavy that it sits in my stomach and makes my body work overtime to digest it. It gives me energy that lasts and is great to eat right before a workout or bike ride to work. This muesli is worth the effort if you have those type of issues.
My love of muesli parallels my love of Sonic Youth. It took persistence, an open mind, and lots of experimentation. I started out with the boxed sweetened Swiss muesli, progressed to unsweetened bulk bin muesli and ended up here.
Source of recipe: I got a rough idea of amounts and whatnot from experience and consulting various recipes and made it my own.
