Deep Fried Tofu
1 lb. of firm or very firm tofu
Cooking oil (corn works well, but lower-fat oils should work too)
Place a large skillet over a HIGH flame. Add enough oil to cover the pan to a 1/2 thickness. Allow this to heat until very hot. While it is heating, slice the tofu into strips (1/4 or thinner). When the oil is hot, turn the heat down to medium. VERY CAREFULLY place the tofu strips into the oil - it is VERY VERY HOT!! I usually use a large spatula to put in 5 or 6 strips at once. Allow the tofu to cook for 30 seconds or so, then flip it and allow it to cook for about another minute. Continue flipping once every minute or so until the tofu is as cooked as you want it to be. Remove and place on paper towels to drain out the oil. Very crisp, VERY tasty... Goes great on a bagel with vegan cream cheese and lettuce and tomato. Also good for lots of other things.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
If you guys are new to cooking tofu - check out your local Asian market. You will definitely want to keep some pressed tofu around the house. It keeps forever in the freezer and is easy to thaw. It's closer to the texture of seitan - you'll love it.
ill definately have to try this one, ive only been vegan for a couple days now and the only tofu i have made was thrown into a vegetable stir fry.
i did as akimsey suggested cut this into thin pieces and breaded it with a flour and spice mixture. Im newly vegan and this was the first time ive ever prepared tofu. It was easy, excelllent and encouraged me to try tofu again. i just dipped mine in a little homemade bar-b-que style sauce. Thanks so much.!!!
