"Brownies" Improved Recipe (healthier!)

What you need:

2 cups spelt/kamut flour
1 cup water
1 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa or carob
1/2 cup oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 cup chocolate or carob chips (optional)

What you do:

Shake the water and 1/2 cup of the flour in a sealed container or a jar to blend the flour and water well and avoid lumps.
Thicken the flour/water mix over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of paste. Remove from heat and let cool.
Mix syrup, salt, vanilla, cocoa/carob and oil. Then add the rest of the flour-water mixture. Mix well.
Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour, baking powder and the nuts or chocolate chips, if you choose to add those.
Spread mixture into a greased 11 x 7 pan. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I'm going to try to make these sometime this weekend. I just made the famous "brownie" recipe and I don't know what I did wrong...but they don't really have a flavor...I wonder if you think applesauce could be subbed for the oil to make it healthier?
