Brownies

What you need:

2 cups flour (I use enriched and whole wheat), divided
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips, optional

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease an 11x7" pan. Boil water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a thin gluey paste. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
2. Mix vegan brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and oil. Then add the flour and water mixture. Mix well.
3. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, nuts, and chocolate chips.
4. Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.
This was a really easy, and really tasty recipe. I gave some to my friends and they fell in love with them. They keep asking me to make more. I thought of maybe putting some chocolate frosting on them, but they were perfect without it. Enjoy.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

These really didn't turn out well for me. Not enough cocoa or sugar. I thought two cups would be WAY too much, but somehow they're really not that sweet  ??? They taste a lot like flour. I used mostly all purpose flour, including the part which I boiled. They fall apart really easy, but aren't fluffy(I don't like fluffy brownies). Like moist crumbs, really. It never wanted to fully cook and get firm, but the edges started to burn so I had to take them out. I have no idea what went wrong.

I may try this again, but I think I will add some applesauce and more cocoa/sugar.

Oh man. These brownies are orgasmic.

I think I overcooked the flour a bit, because it got really glutinous and I had to add some extra water in it, but to get to the required consistency as the recipe says would call for cooking it for a grand total of half a minute, since the texture is already thin and gluey when you combine the two together. Did I do something wrong?

They came out a bit dry fresh out of the oven, probably because I overbaked them a little. But after a night in the fridge, I'm proud to say they're practically not vegan. My mother, who is against any type of cooking/baking I do that doesn't involve eggs or milk, actually ate one yesterday and complimented on its moist and chewy texture (words you DEFINITELY don't find in a vegan vocabulary).

The only downside is perhaps the amount of oil used. I think I will try subbing applesauce in next time.

Thank you.  You're a pioneer in vegan history. :).

these are really, really good! I always wind up needing to bake these longer so they're not too mushy but they are worth it. and I shipped these in a care package to my omni boyfriend and he LOVED them  ;)

These turned out good despite the fact I overcooked them.. According to the recipe it says knife should come out clean well this never happened for me and If i would have left them in any longer then the top would have burned.  These were good with cocoa and powdered sugar sifted over the top yummy.

I followed this recipe exactly, with the exception of cutting all measurements in half and baking in an 8" x 8" pan.  They were very simple to make and turned out looking and tasting just as delicious as any brownie that i've ever had.  wonderful recipe.  people were actually fighting over them.

thanks for sharing your recipe and making me feel like a brownie super hero!  ;D

This turned out so good! I added carob chips, because thats what I had on hand. Vegans and non-vegans alike will enjoy this one!

My husband really loved these..I think I did something wrong though b/c they turned out a little lumpy (from the flour and water)..they still tasted great though-specially when warm. I will try them again!  :)

BEST BROWNIES EVER! I was worried at first because the batter tasted like molassas, and I thought oh no, why did it call for brown sugar?! But once they were baked they were great.  I might try to change the brown sugar/regular sugar ratio a little, but it might be best not to mess with success.

Wow, did anyone read what Psymbolic did with these??  from the photo description:

"My Brownies came out dry(Due to all WW flour & wheat germ), But the flavor was so fantastic I couldn't throw them out. So I crumbled up the brownies, Added Applesauce to moisten, rolled them in balls, Dipped them in Chocolate & sprinkled almonds ontop. Delicious and lovely"

this could be a whole other recipe!  what a wonderful idea, and a great save for slightly botched brownies.
