Salisbury Tempeh

What you need:

Gravy:
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons unrefined flour
2 cups onion soup broth (2 tablespoons powdered onion soup + 2 cups water)
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic
2 tablespoons margarine or oil
1 tablespoon tahini
pinch raw sugar
1/2 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce Tempeh:
1 (8 ounce) package multi-grain tempeh
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons Bragg's or soy sauce
1 cup button mushrooms, sliced
sprinkle garlic powder

What you do:

1. For gravy, mix water and flour well; set aside. In sauce pan, heat (on high medium) all other gravy ingredients. When it starts to boil, slowly add flour mixture. Stir until thickens, and set aside.
2. Cut tempeh down the middle so it looks like you have 2 playing cards, then cut into 4 squares and then into triangles. Put 1/2 cup water and Bragg's or soy sauce in medium fry pan.
3. On medium high heat, fry tempeh for 8 minutes on each side. If the water evaporates before you turn the tempeh over, add 1/4 cup water at a time. It is fine if the water is all gone at the end of the 16 minutes.
4. Add the mushrooms and garlic powder to the pan 3 to 5 minutes before the last 8 minutes is up. Mix them around a few times.
5. To serve, put 2 pieces tempeh on a plate and put some mushrooms on top and then drizzle gravy over them.
I make mashed potatoes and veggies to go with this meal. Enjoy!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This has always been one of my favorites! My meat-eating boyfriend really enjoyed it too and said he would be happy to have this again.

I'm happy with anything doused in yummy gravy so I did enjoy this, but the tempeh its self was a little plain.  I might use baked tofu next time.

Very good!  Did not use mushrooms, but next time I will.

Thanks for the delicious recipe!  ;)b

For some reason, the gravy didn't want to thicken for me, but it still all turned out really tasty. I followed the suggestion to serve it with mashed potatoes and green beans. The omni bf said it's one to make again. Thanks. :-)

This was pretty good.  While I've never been a huge "meat and gravy" girl, my husband loved it.  I did have to add a lot more flour to get the sauce to thicken up.  And I used a packet of onion soup mix instead of onion soup broth.....still came out yummy.

I loved everything about this recipe!  The gravy was awesome and I loved it with the tempeh.  I used vegan french onion soup as the base for my gravy and garden veggie tempeh.  I left out the worcestershire sauce (b/c I didn't have any).  I will cut back on the earth balance in the gravy next time though, maybe half margarine and half oil.  I made smashed garlic potatoes and kale for the sides.  Yum-yum!  ;)b

Really wasnt bad, but I dont think I liked Tempeh, I bought some just to try and the was the best recipe to use with it! Next time I'll use tofu instead I think, or my Sunspot has a new vegan "roast" mmmmmm, good recipe!

I thought this was good.  The gravy was super fab!  My daughter took a bite of the tempeh and said "This tastes like meat!"...she doesn't like meat....

Although this tasted nothing like salisbury steak it still was fabulous!  The gravy is the best vegan I have had!  And I think if it wasn't for me drowning the tempeh in it I don't think the tempeh would of had enough flavor.  Most definitely making this again.

I tried this and I think I messed something up.  I saw it as a way of using up some of my ingredients from my non-vegan days so I used a package of Lipton onion soup mix and some of the worchestershire sauce that I have.  But something didn't come out right.  The tempeh had a good flavor though, but i used too much soy sauce.  I will have to try this one again and not mess it up.

I hope it comes out better for you next time, SQ!  I am glad you reviewed it though as I have never seen this recipe on here before.  It sounds really yummy!  Its now in my to make soon pile.
