Cheeze Ball

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 package (8 oz) vegan cream cheese
    1 block vegan cheddar cheese
    1/4 cup vegan margarine
1-2 tablespoons steak sauce or vegan Worcestershire sauce
    a few dashes liquid smoke
chopped nuts (almonds or walnuts are both good)

Directions:

This is a wonderful appetizer that my grandmother makes every Christmas (of course, her version is not vegan).  I didn't even think about trying to make a vegan version until last night when I was looking around the apartment for something to spread on top of the crackers that I had bought.

I used Tofutti Better-Than-Cream Cheese and cheddar flavored Vegan Rella for the cheeses, then I added liquid smoke to give it that smoky cheddar flavor.  Now I don't have to suffer while everyone in my family chows down on cheese and crackers during the holidays.  Take that, grandma!

1. Let the first three ingredients sit at room temperature about 30 minutes or until soft.

2. Add the steak sauce or vegan Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke.  You can also add some sort of seasoning here if you want (I sprinkled in some creole seasoning and it tasted great).

3. Beat with an electric mixer until creamy.

4. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.

5. Shape into a ball, then roll ball in chopped nuts.

6. Eat on top of crackers.

Serves: 6-8

Preparation time: 30 minutes

A vegan cheezeball? This has to be a symbol of the nearing Apocalypse. Tongue I love it, keep up with the devilish vegan monstrocities. Grin Grin Grin

I haven't made this particular recipe, but I've eaten this kind of food many years ago.  Yes, shred the cheddar before adding to the other ingredients.

I'm pretty excited about this, but I think I'll use Sheese brand of smoked cheddar "cheese" so I can skip the liquid smoke. Plus I just think Sheese tastes better uncooked than most brands. I also think the margarine can be omitted and minced green onions added with good results. I probably won't attempt this until the holidays, but I'll post my review once I do!

If you like cheese balls, go and make this now!  I didn't like it much the first day, but the second day it was wonderful.  I hate veganrella, but the flavor greatly improved in cheese ball form.  Yeah I know a vegan cheese ball just seems wrong, but it really works!

Smiley I made this for Christmas Day apps. My husband and parents are happy to eat Vegan food as long as it doesn't taste 'treehugger' but my in-laws have never had a meal without meat and dairy in their life. I made this the night before (used Tobasco instead of liquid smoke and the Vegan block cheese instead of Follow Your Heart since the smell of the cheddar doesn't sit well with  me). When I tried it that night I wasn't impressed but I rolled it in plastic and sat it inthe fridge overnight. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The next afternoon it was so good we were fighting over it and my in-laws asked for the recipe. It definitelyneeds to 'age' overnight but it's well worth it.

Yummy!  I made this delightful concoction for a Rock Band Party I had last weekend.  Between 5 of us (and mostly me and one guest), we polished off this cheeze ball, countless chocolates, and a big bowl of guac in a matter of hours.

It was a little difficult to handle, and I got cheeze all over my hands while I shaped the ball, but well worth it.

I plan on making this again when I have the chance to entertain.  Rock Banding takes a lot of energy, ya know.  Thumbs Up

Don't shred it. I just made this and shredded my cheese before and it is very difficult to get it creamy after that as you end up with little shredded pieces of cheese that won't blend all the way. I would melt it slightly or try it broken up in strips before you use the electric mixer. It might be better to use a high powered blender to get it really smooth. I am sort of bummed I followed the shredding advice.

When I've had this type of cheeze ball in the past, the cheddar isn't creamy; it just adds little bits of cheddar all throughout the creamy cheeze mixture.  The cheeze ball then has a bit of texure from the shredded bits of cheddar.  So, if you want the cheddar cheeze to be completely smoothed into the cream cheeze, then you need to take another approach.  As you suggested, I'd probably melt the cheddar before adding to the cream cheeze mixture if I was going for a completely smooth cheeze ball.

I will be making this again for a potluck tomorrow.  This recipe is excellent!  I throw everything into the food processor.  I make sure the cheese isn't really cold before blending.  Tastes much better if you make it the day before.
