Tofu Chocolate Ice Cream (no dairy)
1 box (12 ounces) silken tofu (I use Mori Nu soft silken tofu, do not use low fat), do not drain
1 (12 ounce) bag vegan chocolate chips, melted on low heat and cooled
1-2 tablespoons vanilla
1 cup nondairy milk (I use rice)
1. Put the tofu in a blender and process until very smooth. Add the melted, cooled chocolate and process until well combined; you will have to stop and scrape the sides of the blender.
2. Add the milk and vanilla and process until well blended. Pour into a covered container and chill until ready to use.
3. Freeze in an ice cream freezer according to manufacturer directions. This makes a lot of tofu ice cream mix so you may only be able to freeze part of it.
I use my Donvier, which is really easy, I have ice cream in 15 minutes without ice, salt or a lot of cranking. My family loves this recipe and it can even be made with melted high quality white chocolate. Enjoy!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
A coffee version of this comes out well too by the way
This was good, I subbed cocoa powder for the chips and I added a bunch of masking ingredients to sort of cover up the tofu taste. Even my mom (who is not vegan) liked the chocolate flavor
I'm curious about the brands of tofu people are using....Specifically, whether it works better with some brands than others. I haven't tried this recipe, but I use a similar recipe to make chocolate pudding and I have success using mori-nu brand...delicious and hardly much tofu flavour. People who didn't like this; what brand did you use?
The main problem with recipes like this is the requirement of a specific brand. This brand might be widely available in certain parts of the country but I searched through 4 different stores and never found it. Recipes need to allow the possibility of not having access to such specific items.

This recipe was a waste of money. I was hoping to find something I could make that tasted similar to Tofutti and went looking for tofu ice cream recipes. I found this one and gave it a try. I'll keep buying Tofutti even though it's expensive. I have no idea how people made this taste good but I even tried making quite a few enhancements to it and it still just tasted like tofu. Completely 100% tofu flavor. It was horrible. It was totally inedible even after adding tons of extra flavors. I used all high quality ingredients and even added sugar, which the recipe amazingly doesn't require. I've made a few soy ice creams and even almond milk based ice creams that were delicious. Like another person said, this just tastes like frozen tofu.
I have to say this is by far the most delicious vegan icecream I've ever tried. (it even beats store bought brands) I read the reviews for this recipe and decided to reduce the amount of chocolate to 3/4 cups of chocolate, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of agave, and 1 tsp of vanilla. It came out perfect. It sounds like a lot of changes I know, but it worked and the family loved it.
This is the first kind of vegan ice cream I have made myself and it was delicious! I used mori-nu firm tofu because it was all I had and it turned out fine. I also subbed 4 tbs of cocoa powder and about 1/3 cup of vegan sugar instead of melted choc. chips and the end result was awesome. I suggest testing it as you add sugar/powder to get it to your individual taste. Also, I don't have an ice cream maker, so I just put the mix into a plastic container with lid and left it there overnight (went to bar...could probably take it out earlier) and stuck it in the micro for like 30 secs and it was ready to go. Ate the whole thing in one sitting. So easy, I'm in love! :)>>>
I've never heard about this recipe
This is such a fantastic and simple recipe! I had to cut down on the chocolate though. I replaced the vanilla with raspberry extract and added frozen blueberries and fresh raspberries. It turned out far better than I ever imagined!! :)>>>
I make this to take in my lunch every single day! I add in sliced strawberries and vegan carob chips. I never get tired of eating it!
